Warning: Contains spoilers for chapter #258 of Jujutsu Kaisen
Fans of Jujutsu Kaisen have been eagerly waiting to see if and when the protagonist Yuji Itadori will unleash Domain Expansion, one of the most formidable abilities within the arsenal of sorcerers and cursed spirits alike. It is very rare among sorcerers to achieve this state as it requires mastery over many aspects of Jujutsu and cursed techniques. Hence, it's unsurprising that the protagonist, Itadori Yuji, hasn't mastered it, as cursed techniques aren't his strong suit.
However, the recently released chapters #257 and #258 of Jujutsu Kaisen have shed some new light on how Yuji can take a shortcut and achieve this ability. Surprisingly, Yuji, who previously couldn't utilize cursed techniques, showcased the use of Sukuna's Malevolent Shrine in chapter #257. Then, in chapter #258, he took it a step further by using the Simple Domain to counter the King of Curses' domain barely. These occurrences shed light on Yuji's sudden proficiency with these techniques, offering explanations that tie back to a mysterious panel from #chapter 222 of Jujutsu Kaisen.
The "soul swap" training shown through the flashback indicates that Yuji might be on the verge of mastering or may have already mastered the use of Domain Expansion. With this development, it seems inevitable that Yuji will soon unleash his domain in a showdown against Sukuna, the formidable king of curses.
Yuji's Domain Expansion Could Be a Echo of Sukuna's Power
Since Sukuna has utilized Domain Expansion within Yuji's body, there's a possibility that Yuji could replicate it.
In Chapter #258 of Jujutsu Kaisen, titled "Inhuman Makyo Shinjuku Showdown, Part 30," it's revealed how Itadori Yuji and Atsuya Kusakabe managed to swap bodies. As the chapter unfolds, Sukuna is forced to resort to using his Domain Expansion, creating a critical moment where countering becomes imperative. The options available are either opening one's own domain or employing a simple domain. Prior to Yuji initiating the simple domain, a flashback explains how Ui Ui's cursed technique facilitated the soul swap between Kusakabe and Yuji.
The purpose behind swapping bodies was to enable Kusakabe to utilize the simple domain while inhabiting Yuji's body, allowing Yuji's body to retain the technique through muscle memory. Consequently, Yuji becomes capable of employing the forbidden technique of the simple domain. Additionally, the soul swap elucidates how Yuji could also utilize Malevolent Shrine. Applying this same rationale to Sukuna's Domain Expansion while inhabiting Yuji's body, Itadori could indeed utilize Sukuna's Malevolent Shrine Domain Expansion or something very akin to it.
Sukuna's Own Domain Against Him Will Be A Perfect Counter Attack
Yuji seems to be becoming a better version of Sukuna
Close
Chapter #257 of Jujutsu Kaisen delves into the striking similarities between Sukuna and Yuji, stemming from their shared souls. It hints that overcoming Sukuna will require powers akin to his own or a manifestation derived from him. Given that Yuji has evolved into the closest replica of Sukuna, it's plausible that he possesses the potential to defeat Sukuna by harnessing similar powers. This narrative choice not only adds depth to Yuji's character but also provides insight into why Gege Akutami crafted Itadori as the central protagonist.
The prospect of Yuji utilizing his Domain Expansion to ensnare Sukuna, especially since Sukuna himself is currently unable to manifest a domain, presents a compelling scenario. Fans have been wondering for years if Yuji would ever get a Domain Expansion, and if he truly ends up replicating Sukuna's Malevolent Shrine, this would underscore the complexity of their relationship in Jujutsu Kaisen.
