Inside Out 2's New Emotion Trick Can Outdo The Original Movie's Bing Bong Death Scene

Inside Out 2's New Emotion Trick Can Outdo The Original Movie's Bing Bong Death Scene

Summary Inside Out 2 will delve into Riley's new emotions and belief system, potentially surpassing Bing Bong's emotional impact.

The sequel may explore the overwhelming repercussions of Riley's evolving beliefs in her adolescent years.

While Riley's Belief System in Inside Out 2 may be sad, the movie likely won't aim to top Bing Bong's heartrending death scene.

Inside Out 2 will put audiences in their feelings with a new element of Riley's mind, and it may even outdo the original movie's Bing Bong death scene on the scale of emotional impact. Despite being a coming-of-age animation voiced by Inside Out's cast of comedians such as Amy Poehler, Bill Hader, and Mindy Kaling, the initial Inside Out film was very profound and, at times, very devastating. The movie - now a burgeoning Pixar franchise - revolves around the life events of Riley, a young girl whose personified emotions help guide her through her best and worst moments.

In Inside Out, the franchise saw Joy, Anger, Disgust, and Sadness bind together to help an 11-year-old Riley cope with her family's move to San Francisco while getting themselves into complex situations in the deep recesses of Riley's mind. By tracking Riley's emotional development during one of her most challenging life changes thus far, Inside Out cleverly explores human psychology, including its good, bad, and ugly aspects. Soon, the upcoming Inside Out sequel will track Riley's progress through adolescence as she deals with new life changes and emotions, which has the potential to exhibit the franchise's saddest moments yet.

Riley's new emotions in Inside Out 2 will include Anxiety, Envy, Embarrassment, and Ennui.

Riley's "Beliefs" In Inside Out 2 Set Up An Even Sadder Moment Than Bing Bong's Death

Riley's Growing Belief System Could Be Overwhelming For Her And For Audiences

Close

Riley won't just contend with new emotions in the Inside Out sequel but develop "her own set of beliefs," according to recent statements and images teasing Inside Out 2's story. Although fresh, new-founded beliefs sound lively and empowering for a recently turned teenager, like for anyone, they can also come with heavy repercussions - some of which may feel much more dismal to Riley and audiences than the franchise's saddest moments, including Bing Bong's unexpectedly tragic franchise death. Per Inside Out 2 director Kelsey Mann, "...if there's a belief that's not so good, you can really hear the emotion of it."

Mann's statement not only alludes to the overwhelming emotions any human would feel grappling with soured beliefs but suggests that Riley's emotions could contend with her ever-evolving Belief System in Inside Out 2. Assuming that Riley starts to believe something truly terrible about herself or the world around her, it could take hold inside her mind, rendering her and her team of emotions powerless to stop it. The period of adolescence is especially susceptible to damaging beliefs, and Inside Out 2 could maximize this life phase to make a genuinely sad but widely understood moment out of Riley's Belief System.

Can Inside Out 2 Really Top Bing Bong's Death For Emotional Impact?

Inside Out 2 Likely Doesn't Want To Make More Of An Impact Than Bing Bong's Death Did

Bing Bong's death was incredibly heartrending, marking the expiration of a lovable character and a considerable period in Riley's life.

While Riley falling victim to her beliefs certainly has what it takes to top the emotional impact of Bing Bong's death, Inside Out 2 may not want to. Bing Bong was Riley's bubbly yet naive imaginary friend, who grew more lonely and less useful as Riley grew older but found solace in their shared memories. In one of the franchise's saddest scenes, Bing Bong realizes that his ongoing presence in Riley's mind keeps her from maturing, so he sacrifices himself in a void of lost memories to help save her future.

Bing Bong's death was incredibly heartrending, marking the expiration of a lovable character and a considerable period in Riley's life. Seeing as his death had to be pared down from one of Inside Out's initial cuts (via MTV) and was still traumatizing, it's safe to say that the sequel isn't looking to top it, especially seeing as Inside Out 2 already scrapped an emotion from the sequel's story for being "too heavy." Riley's Belief System will make for sad Inside Out 2 moments, but they'll probably be much more palatable, given the franchise's hesitancy with scenes that are too upsetting.
