George's tragic passing was kept off-screen to maintain the show's lighthearted tone and surprise viewers until the end.

The Young Sheldon series finale will address Georgie's reaction to George's death.

Filming George's death delivery scene is the most difficult moment in a Young Sheldon star's career. What started as a typical day for Sheldon and the rest of the Coopers ended with the biggest tragedy in their family. As established in The Big Bang Theory, George died in Young Sheldon season 7, episode 12, "A New Home and a Traditional Texas Torture." Instead of doing it on-screen, however, the tragedy happened away from the family. This left George's Medford High School colleagues and friends to deliver the news to his unsuspecting clan.

Coach Wilkins actor Doc Farrow took it to Instagram to pay tribute to Lance Barber's George while also sharing some insight into filming his particular scene in Young Sheldon season 7, episode 12. Check out his post below:

Farrow references him and Rex Linn with Barber as a trio in Young Sheldon, which makes sense, considering that they were George's closest colleagues at Medford High School. They were also the ones who were tasked to deliver the devastating news of George's passing to Mary, Missy, and Meemaw.

Unlike Sheldon's cheating scandal accusation, which Young Sheldon ended up retconning, The Big Bang Theory didn't reveal the specifics of George's death. It only established that he was long gone by the time Sheldon met Leonard and the rest of the Pasadena gang. The prequel did establish the Cooper patriarch's health issues, with episode 3, "Poker, Faith, and Eggs," showing him having a heart attack. He was rushed to the emergency room for having chest pains and difficulty breathing, but he was able to get away from it without any permanent damage.

The thought of losing George was already too heartbreaking, it would have been overkill if Young Sheldon milked it by executing it for everyone to see.

Years later and with the established tragedy set to happen, however, Young Sheldon season 7 could not let George's actual known death go down on-screen. Despite not shying away from darker topics and themes, it remains a lighthearted family show. The thought of losing George was already too heartbreaking, it would have been overkill if Young Sheldon milked it by executing it for everyone to see. Time constraints may have also played a role in this creative decision, considering the show was only a few episodes away from fully wrapping up.

Ultimately, letting George die off-screen was the best way to tackle the tragedy. Doing so allowed Young Sheldon to pull off the twist until the very last moments of the episodes, while it focused on the response of the rest of the family. His family was distraught, although it's worth noting that Georgie has yet to learn about George's death. His response to it will be tackled in the finale instead.

The Young Sheldon series finale airs on Thursday, May 16, 8pm ET on CBS.
