15 Essential Items For Rangers In Baldur's Gate 3 (& Where To Find Them)

15 Essential Items For Rangers In Baldur's Gate 3 (& Where To Find Them)

Rangers are an often overlooked class in Baldur's Gate 3 and Dungeons & Dragons, which is a shame as they are a brilliantly customizable class with many awesome features. Larian Studios was able to adjust many of the elements for rangers that didn't work well, making rangers tons of fun to play and wonderful for multiclassing. So, whether making a custom ranger or adding Minsc to the party, there are certain items every ranger will want.

The classic ranger conjures up an image of a survival expert, armed with a bow, ready to pick off enemies from afar. However, with three distinct ranger subclasses in Baldur's Gate 3 to choose from, there is a great deal of versatility when it comes to gameplay and builds. These items are perfect to help with damage, enhancing the ranger's spells, or general durability.

15 Elven Chain - Rare Medium Armor

Can Be Purchased In Act 3 From Exxvikyap

The Elven Chain is a fantastic piece of armor that works well for any character as it grants proficiency in medium armor, rather than requiring it as a prerequisite. The armor has a base AC of 14, plus the wearer's Dexterity modifier, to a maximum of two. However, the Elven Chain is especially useful for rangers as it gives advantage on Dexterity saving throws and a plus two bonus to Initiative rolls. This boost is excellent for Gloom Stalker Assassin rogue/ranger multiclass builds who rely on high inititate rolls.

14 Armour Of Agility - Very Rare Medium Armor

Can Be Purchased In Act 3 From Gloomy Fentonson

Custom image by Sarah-Jane Simpson

Rangers, like rogues, will often have the highest Dexterity in the party and the Armour of Agility helps them make the most of that while offering excellent protection. The armor offers a based AC of 17 but then allows the wearer's full Dexterity modifier to be added instead of being capped at two as many other medium armors do. The Armour of Agility also works well with stealth-focused rangers as it does not impose a disadvantage on Stealth checks and gives a plus two boost to all saving throws.

13 Strange Conduit Ring - Uncommon Ring

Can Be Looted In Act 1 From Creche Y'llek

Custom image by Sarah-Jane Simpson

While rangers may not have access to many spells, they do have some great utility and damage spells that require concentration, perhaps the best known being hunter's mark. The Strange Conduit Ring is a great item to pick up as it allows the wearer to deal an extra 1d4 psychic damage with their weapon while they are concentrating on a spell, which should be always for a ranger with hunter's mark. The ring can be found inside an elegant chest in the Inquisitor's Chambers of Crèche Y'llek.

A'jak'nir Jeera is tucked away in a rocky area southeast of the Creche waypoint. When entering through the main doors, turn right at the intersection and then right again to find her.

12 Circlet Of Hunting - Very Rare Circlet

Can Be Purchased In Act 2 From Araj Oblodra

Custom image by Sarah-Jane Simpson

Speaking of Hunter's mark, this is a must-buy for any ranger as soon as they meet Araj Oblodra in Act 2. While wearing this circlet, the ranger will have a 1d4 bonus to attack rolls against targets marked by Hunter's Mark , True Strike , Faerie Fire , or Guiding Bolt . This acts as a permanent bless for the ranger as they use hunter's mark on their foes. The Circlet of Hunting can be bought from Araj Oblodra, who can be found on the main floor of Moonrise Towers.

For the bonus to apply, the wearer of the circlet needs to be the character who marked the target.

11 Cloak Of Displacement - Rare Cloak

Can Be Purchased In Act 3 From Entharl Danthelon

Custom image by Sarah-Jane Simpson

Sometimes, no matter how stealthy or how far back from the main fray a ranger is, they will inevitably draw some fire from the enemy. The Cloak of Displacement is a great choice here, making it just that little bit harder to hit them, as it imposes disadvantage to enemy attack rolls against the wearer at the beginning of the wearer's turn each round. The effect then remains for two turns or until the ranger takes damage.

Name Feature Cloak of Displacement Activates at the start of the wearer's turn, imposing disadvantage on attack rolls against the wearer.

The Cloak of Displacement can be bought in Act 3 from Danthelon's Dancing Axe in Wyrm's Crossing.

10 Ring Of Mental Inhibition - Uncommon Ring

Can be Found In Act 2, Inside The House Of Deep Shadow

The Ring of Mental Inhibition is a great item that allows the wearer to work with other spellcasters in the party. When an enemy fails a saving throw against one of the wearer's spells or actions, such as conjure barrage, they gain Mental Fatigue for two turns. This imposes a minus one penalty to Charisma, Intelligence, and Wisdom saving throws while they are affected, giving other spellcasters a better chance of their spells having an effect.

Name Feature Ring of Mental Inhibition When a target fails a saving throw against the wearer's action or spell, they gain Mental Fatigue for two turns.

The ring is found inside a locked chest, and rAAZ's video shows the location from the Shadowed Battlefield waypoint.

The Mental Fatigue condition is not applied to saving throws made to end an effect, such as saves made to shake off Hold Person .

9 Harold - Rare Heavy Crossbow

Can Be Rewarded In Act 1 By Zarys

Custom image by Sarah-Jane Simpson

When telling people to pick up Harold , many may be confused that they've missed a secret companion, but Harold is a brilliant heavy crossbow given as a quest reward in Act 1. While wielding Harold, whenever the ranger deals damage with the crossbow, the target must succeed in a Charisma saving throw or be under the effects of Bane for two turns. Harold is rewarded by Zhentarim agent Zarys, who will greet the party as they enter the Zhentarim basement for bringing her the chest in "Find the Missing Shipment."

8 Adamantine Scale Mail - Very Rare Medium Armour

Can be Crafted In Act 1 At The Adamantine Forge

The Adamantine Scale Mail is a fantastic early-game armor that I tend to keep in my party right the way through to Act 3. While wearing this armor, the ranger is immune to critical hits, and all incoming damage is reduced by one. The armor also has a feature that sends attackers reeling for two turns when they hit the wearer with a melee attack, imposing a minus one penalty to their attack rolls. The armor can be crafted using the Adamantine Forge, and rAAZ shows in their video the location of all six molds.

7 Helldusk Boots - Very Rare Boots

Can Be Looted In Act 3 From Wyrm's Rock Fortress

Part of the Helldusk Armor set, the Helldusk Boots, can be found in Gortash's quarters in a locked gilded chest. While wearing these boots, the ranger will be able to ignore difficult terrain, cannot be knocked prone, and cannot be moved by force by an enemy's spell or actions. The boots also give them the ability to use their reaction to succeed on a failed saving throw once per long rest.

Name Feature Helldusk Boots Cannot be forcibly moved by actions or spells, cannot be made prone, ignore difficult terrain. May use reaction to succeed a failed saving throw. Hellcrawler: Once per short rest, teleport to an area and deal 2d8 fire damage in 3m/10ft zone when landing.

Finally, once per short rest, the wearer can teleport to an area and deal 2d8 fire damage in a three-meter/10-foot blast zone.

6 The Dead Shot - Very Rare Longbow

Can Be Purchased In Act 3 From Fytz the Firecracker

Custom image by Sarah-Jane Simpson

The Dead Shot is one of the best ranged weapons in Baldur's Gate 3, is perfect for any ranger, and can be bought in Act 3 from Fytz. The Dead Shot doubles the user's proficiency bonus for ranged attacks, as well as reducing the number needed for a critical hit by one. This all but guarantees a hit with bonuses of plus eight by Act 3, and with other items like the Elixir of Viciousness to further reduce the critical hit threshold, the odds of dealing deadly amounts of damage are increased.

5 Knife of the Undermountain King - Very Rare Shortsword

Can Be Purchased In Act 1 From A'jak'nir Jeera

Another fantastic item for those wanting to lower the critical hit threshold is the Knife of the Undermountain King , which can be bought from A'jak'nir Jeera in Crèche Y'llek. I love this shortsword and will keep it on hand throughout the game for various party members, as it's also a brilliant item for rogues in BG3. As well as lowering the number needed for critical hits by one, the sword gives the wielder advantage on attack rolls against lightly or heavily obscured targets, which makes it especially effective in Act 2's Shadow-Cursed Lands.

4 Legacy Of The Masters - Very Rare Gloves

Can Be Purchased In Act 3 From Dammon

Custom image by Sarah-Jane Simpson

Boosts to damage and accuracy are always good, especially as the game progresses and the enemies lean towards having higher ACs. Assuming that he survives to Act 3, Dammon sells the Legacy of the Masters , a pair of impressive gloves that improve the chances of successful attacks as well as give a plus one bonus to Strength saving throws. While wearing these gloves, the ranger will receive a plus two bonus to attack rolls, which includes spell attack rolls, and a plus two bonus to damage rolls for weapon attacks.

3 Helldusk Armour - Legendary Heavy Armor

Can Be Looted In Act 3 From Raphael

Custom image by Sarah-Jane Simpson

The Helldusk Armour packs enough of a punch that any class can make good use of it, as it grants proficiency in heavy armor to anyone who puts it on. The armor inflicts burning for three turns on enemy casters whenever the wearer succeeds in a saving throw. It gives resistance to fire damage, and the wearer will take three points less damage from all sources. However, the Fly spell, which can be cast once per long rest, is especially useful for rangers as it allows for quick repositioning and lets them stay out of reach of foes.

2 Helm Of Balduran - Legendary Headwear

Can Be Found In Act 3, Inside The Dragon's Sanctum

The Helm of Balduran is a fantastic piece of equipment that can be looted from the Wyrmway as shown in Salty's video. The helmet prevents attackers from landing critical hits on the wearer and also gives a plus one bonus to AC and saving throws. The wearer will have immunity from being stunned, but best of all is the Balduran's Vitality passive feature. This will automatically heal the wearer two hit points at the beginning of their turn in combat and pairs well with other items that are triggered by healing, such as The Whispering Promise .

1 Gontr Mael - Legendary Longbow

Can Be Looted In Act 3 From Steel Watcher Titan

Custom image by Sarah-Jane Simpson

Finally, there is Gontr Mael , that can be looted from the Steel Watcher Titan inside Baldur Gate 3's Steel Watch Foundry in Baldur's Gate 3. Once per short rest, the bow has a weapon action that frightens enemies and deals 1d4 radiant damage. The bow also has a chance to inflict a guiding bolt after hitting an enemy, which pairs well with the Circlet of Hunting. Lastly, the wielder can cast Celestial Haste at the third level once per long rest, which doubles movement speed, grants an additional action, gives plus two to AC, and gives an advantage on Dexterity saving throws.
