Starfield Player's Immersive Spacewalking Mod Spotlights Another Feature Bethesda Should Take Note Of

Starfield is a game about exploring the great expanse of the known galaxy, granting players the chance to fly around the cosmos and discover various extraterrestrial wonders, but one creative mod finally takes the idea of being an astronaut and makes it a little more realistic. While Bethesda spent a great deal of time developing Starfield's universe, players don't actually spend too much time floating around space. Most of their adventures are confined to planetside treks or vehicles, so those wanting to experience the anxiety of drifting through space need to look for some third-party assistance.

Posting to Reddit, user Sgtwhiskeyjack9105 shared footage of their character embarking upon a brief spacewalk thanks to the "CCR - Simple EVA - Hotkey Spacewalk" mod by TiberiusMars.

Using their boost pack to navigate zero gravity, the tetherless spacewalk looks incredibly dramatic as they fly around what appears to be a space station in low orbit above an unknown planet. To return to their ship, they simply look at it and fast travel to the location, seamlessly entering into the pilot's seat and taking off; It's so effective that one has to wonder why it took a mod to become a reality.

Spacewalking Should Be An Official Starfield Mechanic

It Would Only Make The Game More Immersive

Close

One of the biggest criticisms leveled at Starfield is that its exploration isn't deep enough, an issue that's present on most of the game's planets and cities. While spacewalking may not solve the issue, it would at least allow some more variety in the kinds of activities players can undertake. Moreover, its implementation could lead to more diverse quests that make use of zero gravity to a greater extent than what's already in the game.

Having said that, if Bethesda were to incorporate spacewalking, the studio would also need to facilitate additional means of play to make it worth players' time. A common suggestion among the community is the inclusion of customizable space stations that players can build and maintain as a personal orbital base of operations. Having the ability to exit the station and float around the facility fixing malfunctions or building upon the exterior would be a fun way to emphasise spacewalking.

Screen Rant's Take: Starfield Should Add Spacewalking

It Just Makes Sense

If Bethesda wants to please the Starfield community, I believe it only makes sense to add a mechanic that would further enhance players' immersion. Having the opportunity to leave one's ship and jump between meteors to mine resources and battle enemies would be extremely fun. One can only hope that the studio embraces the idea and provides a system that builds upon the "CCR - Simple EVA - Hotkey Spacewalk" mod with new mechanics and features.
