What You Need to Know Before Watching My Hero Academia: You're Next

What You Need to Know Before Watching My Hero Academia: You're Next

My Hero Academia: You're Next is finally hitting American theaters, and there are a few things that fans of the series ought to know before going out to see the new film. This (spoiler-free) information can help enhance the viewing experience, and offers some much-needed context to when the film is set and what it's about.

My Hero Academia: You're Next is the fourth film in the franchise, but it's not necessary to have seen any of the previous films in order to follow this one. You're Next is largely a stand-alone film, but it makes use of the context established by this point in the anime, so understanding when it's set is very important. It also helps to have a basic primer on the movie's original characters in order to engage with the film most easily. Finally, there's the mystery of the big villain which the entire film circles around, including the nature of his Quirk.

The Most Important Information for Those Viewing the Film for the First Time

Close

My Hero Academia: You're Next is set just after season 7, episode 4, in which a scene not from the manga was added of Class 1-A being split into three teams: one led by Bakugo, one led by Deku, and one led by Shoto. At the start of the film, the students are still split into these teams, and spend most of the movie spread apart. In the context of the anime series, that places the film just after Aoyama is identified as the UA traitor (meaning Aoyama isn't in the movie) and during the week in which Shigaraki is recuperating from his fight with Star and Stripe.

The movie features several original characters, but a few are significantly more notable than the rest. First is Anna Scervino, a young woman with blonde hair who's seen captive to the villains for much of the film. She has an extremely powerful Quirk, which the villains have gone quite far out of their way to obtain. Next is Giulio Gandini, a mysterious figure who seems to be after Anna, but isn't working for the villains. Giulio sports a motorcycle as well as some prosthetic limbs which incorporate weapons into their design. He has some sort of relationship with Anna, although what it is isn't made clear until later.

Finally, there's the big villain, Dark Might. Dark Might, as one might guess, is an assumed identity, one that he takes on during the course of the film. He looks and sounds just like All Might did in his musclebound form, but is indeed a distinct character. Dark Might isn't operating alone, and has several henchmen working for him, each of whom have a powerful Quirk of their own. The nature of Dark Might's Quirk is a mystery for much of the film.

The film does have a brief post-credits scene, so fans should be aware to hang around until the credits have rolled if they wish to see it.

Without any spoilers, that about covers everything a fan needs to know in order to go into the My Hero Academia: You're Next movie fully prepared.
