Power Rangers Prime Trailer Confirms the Return of the Samurai Rangers

The Samurai Rangers are back and returning to brand-new Power Rangers storylines. Airing in 2011, Power Rangers Samurai is the 18th season of Power Rangers, with the cast returning for the following year's 19th season, Power Rangers Super Samurai. The seasons are most notable for featuring the debut of Lauren Shiba, the franchise's first female Red Ranger.

BOOM! Studios has released a new trailer on YouTube for Power Rangers Prime by Melissa Flores and Michael YG, the newest franchise relaunch to be released on November 13th. Previews for the first issue revealed that Lauren Shiba would return to the franchise, but this new trailer confirms that all the Samurai Rangers will be making appearances.

The trailer also features multiple hints regarding a possible connection to BOOM! Studios' previous Rangers series and the overarching Rangerverse.

Does Tragedy Await These Rangers?

The full synopsis for Power Rangers Prime #1 suggests some interesting twists and turns:

Angel Grove University students face a difficult choice after crossing paths with a fugitive straight out of legend. The consequences for hiding her are dire…but her existence may not stay secret for long. In the wake of Darkest Hour, prepare yourself for a bold new era and a brand new story unlike anything that’s come before! A perfect “Day One” jumping on point for new readers and old fans alike!

The trailer itself promises that new Rangers and new villains are due to show up in the series, but evidently, the classic Samurai Rangers of old will have a significant role in the plot. The trailer first illustrates the Rangers training at the Shiba House dojo - until they are forced to morph once their headquarters are infiltrated by mysterious green creatures attacking them. The trailer also features the Samurai Megazord facing down a furry wildebeest monster. Knowing that Lauren Shiba will be a fugitive in this series, perhaps the other Samurai Rangers will endure the same fate.

While audiences get more shots of Lauren out of costume, a quick morphing sequence seems to show the Samurai Rangers morphing - but in the center is a black-haired woman morphing into the Red Ranger suit who is clearly not Lauren. Past previews have shown Lauren morphing into her usual Red get-up, but perhaps these new Rangers being integrated into the franchise may use the former, captive Samurai Rangers' morphers - maybe in a desperate scenario - to acclimate themselves to Rangerhood. If that's the case, it'll likely lead to the new Rangers eventually getting unique suits and morphers of their own.

Is This New Power Rangers Series Connected to the MMPR BOOM! Series?

An Eltarian Presence Suggests That the Answer Is Yes

Notably, Eltarians - Eltar being Zordon's home planet - are featured in this series, as seen in previous previews, variant covers, and now the trailer. One black-bearded Eltarian echoes Zartus, the Silver Guardian of Eltar, and Zordon's former ally who turns on him during Mighty Morphin Power Rangers' Eltarian War arc. If it's truly Zartus, then this series shares a deeper connection to the MMPR comics than previously suggested. Hints of a new chapter once implied that this is a whole new Power Rangers universe, but fans of Mighty Morphin can be excited that these new stories still share at least elements of that universe.

Power Rangers Prime #1 is available November 13th, 2024 from BOOM! Studios.
