The Umbrella Academy Cast Look Back On 4 Seasons & Tease The Final Timeline
Summary The Umbrella Academy season 4 introduces the Final Timeline, reuniting the Hargreeves siblings on a mission with restored powers.
New faces like Nick Offerman and Megan Mulally join the main cast in the final season, adding a fresh dynamic to the storyline.
Cast members shared bittersweet feelings on the red carpet as they bid farewell to the show, teasing a season filled with human stories and surprising character developments.
The Umbrella Academy season 4 is just around the corner, and the hit Netflix show finds the Hargreeves siblings on the verge of yet another apocalypse. It just may be the last one, however, as the series enters what has been dubbed as "The Final Timeline." The Umbrella Academy season 3 finale dropped the siblings, Lila, and Sparrow Ben off in a new timeline crafted by their father Reginald, where they were left without powers and with relatively normal lives.
But the band is back together in The Umbrella Academy season 4, as the Hargreeves are sent on one more mission with their powers restored. While the main cast has all returned for the final outing, including Elliot Page as Viktor, Tom Hopper as Luther, Emmy Raver-Lampman as Allison, and Robert Sheehan as Klaus, the show also introduces some fresh faces. Among the newcomers are comedic legends Nick Offerman and Megan Mulally, who play Gene and Jean Thibedeau, as well as Arrested Development's David Cross in the role of Sy Grossman.
Related How Viktor's Powers Work In The Umbrella Academy Viktor Hargreeves is the most powerful member of the Umbrella Academy, and his powers are as fascinating and complex as they are dangerous.
Screen Rant attended the Los Angeles premiere of The Umbrella Academy season 4, interviewing stars such as Aidan Gallagher, Justin H. Min, David Castañeda, and Ritu Arya about bidding the Hargreeves household adieu. They were joined by several other cast members and comic book co-creator Gabriel Bá, who shared their favorite memories, potential spinoff ideas, and much more.
The Umbrella Academy Season 4 Is A Bittersweet Farewell For Aidan Gallagher
Screen Rant: What are you most excited to explore for your character in The Final Timeline?
Aidan Gallagher: Going into the Final Timeline? I can tell you very little without spoiling things, but I think it's a very interesting season, especially picking up with the characters not having any powers and living semi-normal lives. I think for Five especially - because I can only speak for me and my character - we tell a really human and relatable story. I'm proud of this year; I'm really proud. It feels so surreal now that we're here and it's all done, but I think it was really great. "Bittersweet." Everyone's said that word to me. It's the perfect encapsulation.
Is there any Hargreeve family member or other loved ones that you spend the most time with this season, or with whom you have the most surprising dynamic?
Aidan Gallagher: Well, it's very fun to shoot each of these seasons and see what different pairings they put us in because the way the show works, we all sort of start off together or disassembled, and then the two of us might go off on a little journey. This year was really fun to play, and it's really fun to see how the characters changed. I cannot say any more without spoiling things, so I will stop now!
Fans love the family dance sequences. Is there any one song that you'd like to dance to with this cast?
Aidan Gallagher: As ourselves? We kind of did that in season 3. There's a ballroom scene, and they had us pick different songs. I think I picked "Need You Tonight" by INXS and one other one song that I can't remember the name of. But, yeah, we danced our hearts out!
Finally, now that we're saying farewell to this super family, is there any other superhero franchise or family you'd like to join?
Aidan Gallagher: Oh, boy! You know what, let's edit me into all of the Nolan Batman films. Just in the background, looking at the lens. I don't even need a character description. Just throw me in there with no context.
David Castañeda Wanted More Diego & Viktor In The Umbrella Academy Season 4
Screen Rant: What can you tell me about the Final Timeline and your role in it?
David Castañeda: Well, the Final Timeline hopefully offers closure to many, many apocalypses and hopefully some comedy - especially with Diego. And some frustration and some relatability for someone who doesn't really appreciate what they have to offer without being identified [by] a superpower, which is something that Diego struggles with in the beginning of the season.
Is there any one character or dynamic that you think fans will be surprised by when it comes to Diego?
David Castañeda: I don't think so. I think the writers have done a great job of giving the fans what they really like. There's a lot of Diego and Lila; a lot of Diego and Luther. Elliot and I had chimed in about how we sort of wish there would've been a little bit more of Diego and Viktor, but I think people are going to like it.
Fans love the family dance scenes. Is there any song that you would like to dance to with this cast?
David Castañeda: That's a good question. I would say something with Sexyy Red!
You're going to be in Ballerina, which I'm very excited for. What can you say to fans of John Wick about what to expect?
David Castañeda: Oh, man. It's going to be exactly what you like about John Wick. A lot of fighting; a lot of intricate stunts. There's a lot of one-takes, I think, but also an incredible amount of craftsmanship. I believe it's going to be great. At least, the experience was phenomenal.
The Umbrella Academy’s Justin H. Min Reveals The Fundamental Truth About Every Ben
Screen Rant: What's new with Ben in the Final Timeline?
Justin H. Min: What's not new, am I right? He is very lost and confused. This is a man who loves his powers; he loves his family. Both are gone, and he's the only surviving member of the Sparrow Academy left. He doesn't have his powers, and his entire identity's been wrapped around that, so he's a bit of a lost boy.
You've spent a little more time as Sparrow Ben now than as Umbrella Ben. What was that shift like, and what do you see the defining trait of Sparrow Ben?
Justin H. Min: Steve and I talked a lot about nature versus nurture. Who are these two people if they are fundamentally genetically the same person, but raised in very different environments? I think they are fundamentally very similar, but it just manifests itself in different ways. That fundamental core need is the need to belong and the need to be seen. I think something really exciting about season 4 is that it's a showcase of the softer side of Ben; almost hearkening back to seasons 1 and 2.
From a fan perspective, what do you think is the most fun or exciting aspect of the Final Timeline?
Justin H. Min: Just all the shenanigans that the family gets up to as a whole. I think the show is at its best when it's all together with the family, and it shows all of this dysfunction and whatnot. I think there's a lot of that.
Fans love the family dance sequences. Is there any one song that you'd like to dance to with this cast?
Justin H. Min: I didn't get a chance to dance with them for "I Think We're Alone Now," so I think we should just bring that back. Have Ben in it this time, wouldn't you agree?
Finally, now that we're saying farewell to this super family, is there any other superhero franchise or family you'd like to join?
Justin H. Min: I'm open! Marvel, call me. DC, call me. I'm open for any and all parts and roles
Ritu Arya Recalls Her Favorite Memories From The Umbrella Academy Set
Screen Rant: Is there any one dynamic that you find most surprising for Lila this season?
Ritu Arya: [Laughs] Yes, but I'm not going to say. Got to leave a little bit of mystery, do you know what I mean?
Over the course of your time on the show, do you have a favorite memory from set?
Ritu Arya: A favorite memory? He's [Robert] saying nice things about me, and it's making me feel emotional. I'm literally welling up; it's a thing. They got me with the sad music! I've cried so much already; I don't want to cry whilst I'm here. There's so much waiting around, and it's the stuff that's off-camera that's my favorite memory. When you're with all the crew, and people are taking naps together. It's the family that you make, outside of what's on camera, that's my favorite.
Jordan Claire Robbins Explains How She Tackles Each New Grace In The Umbrella Academy
Screen Rant: What are you most excited for fans to see from the Final Timeline?
Jordan Claire Robbins: I'll be honest with you, I don't know much about this final because it's top secret. I only know what I came in for, so I am going to be discovering it along with you guys. But I'm told that it wraps up in a really beautiful way, so I'm excited to see how it all comes together in the journey.
How do you step into every new iteration of your character?
Jordan Claire Robbins: With terror! [Laughs] Every season was a fun adventure for me because I never knew what to expect, and I played so many different versions of my character. I'm very cerebral; I love to do research. Season 3, for example, I felt like I saw her as a cult member. So, I did a lot of research on cults. Season 1 was very 1950s, so it's just diving into what inspired the character.
Do you have either a favorite memory from set or a favorite scene that stayed with you?
Jordan Claire Robbins: I had a lot of fun shooting the scene in season 1 with Emmy and Tom. It was very late at night, and for whatever reason, we did like a hundred takes. We were giddy and got the giggles, and I'm trying to cook breakfast. I'm a terrible multitasker, and I kept fading. Instead of a smiley face, I kept doing a frowny face, and then we couldn't stop laughing. It was very unprofessional, but when I think back, that's the night that I remember smiling the most because it was so silly.
You've had some special relationships or dynamics with different characters. Is there any one character you're most excited for fans to see you with this season?
Jordan Claire Robbins: I'm going to give a cryptic answer, which is that I don't share any scenes with people that you might expect.
Fans' favorite scenes are often the family dance sequences. Is there any one song you would like to dance with this cast to?
Jordan Claire Robbins: Ooh, that's a great question. I'm from Bermuda, so I grew up with a lot of R&B. Collie Buddz is from Bermuda. Maybe some reggae, that would be totally different left turn from what we usually have on the show. Maybe something like that.
Millie Davis Shares Her Experience Working With Emmy Raver-Lampman In The Umbrella Academy Season 4
Screen Rant: What was it like stepping into the role of Claire?
Millie Davis: Yeah, it was definitely a fun energy. Knowing that someone had played the younger version of the role before, I was just hoping that I would do it justice. I know Claire is an important character to Allison, and also to the fans who love Allison, so I was really nervous to take this on. But I think that the environment on set made it so easy for me to feel comfortable, and I'm so happy to be here.
How was it working with Emmy Raver-Lampman? Did she give you some tips on how to break into The Umbrella Academy family?
Millie Davis: Absolutely. I had so many chats with Emmy, and I was able to spend some time with her off-camera, which was so nice. She's just amazing. She's like a second mom to me, and I'm so glad that we've kept our friendship. She's very, very talented, so getting to share the screen with her was such an honor for me.
Fans' favorite scenes are often the family dance sequences. Is there any one song you would like to dance with this cast to?
Millie Davis: Such a good question. I love anything Taylor Swift, and I'm sure most of the world does right now, so I feel like something like that would be so cool. But I know it's set in a different kind of world, so I don't know. I love anything by The Smiths, and I feel like something that's a slow kind of dance would be cool to do.
One of my favorite films that you were in was Good Boys, and Seth Rogan is amazing. Would you like to work with Seth Rogan again in the future, maybe on the next Mutant Mayhem movie?
Millie Davis: Absolutely. I think that'd be so cool. I have some friends in the Ninja Turtles movie, definitely. I think he's very talented. He writes amazing movies, and Good Boys was so fun.
The Umbrella Academy’s Ken Hall Hypes Both Pogo & Herb
Screen Rant: What's up with Herb and Dot this season?
Ken Hall: Dot is literally right beside me right now. Without giving spoilers away, I think fans will really love the nice completion to all of the timelines; all of the stories. Without giving away too much, I think fans will really appreciate it.
From a fan perspective, what do you think is most exciting about the Final Timeline?
Ken Hall: Yeah, that's a great question. It's kind of coming full circle. It's really lovely, and I'm very gratefuI because I was there at the beginning to do the body of Pogo. To see how much it's evolved and changed? I remember reading the first few pages of the graphic novel, where they're fighting at the Eifel Tower. I'm like, "How they're going to do this?" And sure enough, with multiple timelines and everything, they're able to pull it off, which I don't think is any kind of easy feat. And I love that they pull it off with a sense of humor and playfulness that has such a wide appeal that. I'm very grateful to be part of it.
Finally, do you have a favorite moment from set?
Ken Hall: Oh, wow. I've had so many great moments. To be honest, one of the more memorable ones was my first day on set. It was back in Toronto, I think, at the start of February. It was raining, and I had such a bad case of bronchitis. I was on antibiotics, and I'm like, "I just want to do a good job." I felt if I got through that, then I could get through anything. And sure enough! It is very memorable, and it's a badge of honor to not only get through it but also to thrive in it as well.
The Umbrella Academy Co-Creator Gabriel Bá Shares His Favorite Part Of The TV Adaptation
Screen Rant: What are you feeling as The Umbrella Academy comes to a close?
Gabriel Bá: The whole experience for me has been very surreal because it's a different scale from what I'm used to, in every aspect from how many people work on the show to how many people it reaches. To have something like this? This is not a comic book launch; it's a premiere. Everything's a different scale, and it's a little overwhelming. But at the same time, it all began with two guys making a comic book, so it shows the power of storytelling and what you can do with an idea. So, I'm really happy to be here and to see where something that you create can take you.
Was there any one thing you have created in the comics that you were amazed at seeing adapted into the show?
Gabriel Bá: I think my biggest pride of the show is having Pogo in every scene that he appears. Because I know the effort it takes to have and to make him, and I love every scene that he appears. The way they worked him and developed that character in the different seasons was really fun to watch.
Of the Hargreeves family members, who do you think was best represented?
Gabriel Bá: All of them are different from the comic book, which I like. I like how they developed throughout the first three seasons, and now in [season 4] even more. But maybe Number Five was the closest one. I don't know why, but his personality is closest to the character in the comic book.
If there was ever to be a spinoff, on which characters would you like it to be based?
Gabriel Bá: I don't know, many of them could be great in a spinoff. Hazel and Cha-Cha would be a great spinoff because the way the show treated their agency [Temps Commission] is great. I would love to have spinoffs for the kids, but the kids grow up. You see them here; they're all grown up already. Who else? The fans love Klaus, and he would make hundreds of fun spinoffs, but all the characters could expand into something different.
The Umbrella Academy season 4 premieres August 8 on Netflix.
