Every Pokémon In Detective Pikachu

Every Pokémon In Detective Pikachu

Summary A "detective Pikachu," with amnesia, partners with Tim to solve Harry's disappearance.

Mewtwo, a man-made clone of Mew, plays a vital role in the plot.

The movie features dozens of Pokémon, most of which are from the first generation.

Plenty of Pokémon can be found in Pokémon: Detective Pikachu, particularly from the first generation, from important characters in the movie to background creatures and Easter eggs. Based on the game of the same name, Detective Pikachu is about a young man called Tim (Justice Smith) who is estranged from his father, a police detective working in Ryme City. Tim has been raised by his grandmother from a young age, but when he finds out his father has been killed in a car accident, he returns to Ryme City to settle his affairs in this live-action video game movie.

There, he meets his father's Pokémon partner: a Pikachu (voiced by Ryan Reynolds) with an adorable little hat, who claims to be a "world-class detective" and has a serious addiction to coffee. Pikachu doesn't believe that Harry is dead and persuades Tim to help him investigate the mystery of what caused the car accident, and how Detective Pikachu lost his memory. Helping them out is CNM intern and wannabe investigative journalist Lucy Stevens (Kathryn Newton), and her Pokémon partner, Psyduck. In Ryme City, humans co-exist with Pokémon, meaning there is a Pokémon from every type in almost every frame of the movie.

Pikachu

Type: Electric

Close

Pokédex Number: 025

Description: The most iconic Pokémon of all time, Pikachu is the movie’s main character alongside Tim. It must be noted that this Pikachu is not the same one from the anime. This is Harry’s Pikachu, who is not only his Pokémon partner but also his detective partner. Pikachu has amnesia during most of the movie and does not remember what happened to Harry. Strangely, Tim can understand everything this Pikachu says, whereas every other character only hears the classic “Pikapi.” Pikachu’s memory loss and why Tim can understand him are tied to Mewtwo’s plan.

Mewtwo

Type: Psychic

Close

Pokédex Number: 150

Description: The most powerful Pokémon in Detective Pikachu by far, Mewtwo is a man-made organism created to be an advanced clone of Mew. Mewtwo was kidnapped by Howard and used as a test subject to create a compound that would remove the Pokémon’s agency. Howard’s ultimate plan revolved around Mewtwo, who originates from the Kanto region. Although this Mewtwo comes from Kanto, it is not the same one from the first Pokémon movie, Pokémon: The First Movie: Mewtwo Strikes Back. The timeline does not add up, meaning this is a different Mewtwo that was also made into a weapon by humans.

Psyduck

Type: Water

Close

Pokédex Number: 054

Description: Lucy Stevens' Pokémon partner who gets explosive stress headaches. This Psyduck is rarely inside his Poke Ball and spends most of the movie hanging out with Lucy, Tim, and Pikachu. The group is always making sure Psyduck doesn’t get stressed, otherwise, his psychic powers will be activated. Toward the end of Detective Pikachu, however, Psyduck’s powers help them defeat the Greninja trio that was attacking them. The fact that Psyduck is Lucy’s Pokémon partner initially suggested she was going to be a live-action version of Misty, which did not happen.

Ditto

Type: Normal

Close

Pokédex Number: 132

Description: A shape-shifting Pokémon. Two Dittos appear in Detective Pikachu, with one being essential to the movie’s plot. As a result of Howard’s secret Pokémon research, this Ditto can transform into humans and even imitate their voices. For example, Ms. Norman, who works for Howard and commands his henchmen, is actually Ditto. The scene in which Ms. Norman removes her shades and reveals Ditto’s beady eyes is particularly disturbing.

Charizard

Type: Fire, Flying

Close

Pokédex Number: 006

Description: Charmander’s final form, Charizard is one of the most popular Pokémon of the game’s first generation. Although several Charmanders appear in the background in Detective Pikachu, one Charizard has a significant role in the film. When Tim goes to the fighting arena, the only way he can get the info he needs is by accepting a rematch between Harry’s Pikachu and the arena’s owner Charizard. This is the only proper Pokémon battle in the movie and features Charizard’s signature moves.

Mr. Mime

Type: Psychic, Fairy

Close

Pokédex Number: 122

Description: One of Harry Goodman's informants, Mr. Mine is subjected to a tough interrogation in which Tim and Pikachu have to understand how its powers work. Not only does Mr. Mime believe in its mimics, but it also creates actual invisible walls that help with its act. Once Tim realizes this, he gets inside Mr. Mime’s box and threatens the Pokémon with invisible gasoline. The fact that Harry’s most important informant was a Pokémon that could only communicate through mimics made the entire scene hilarious.
