Sex and the City delivered some of the most iconic television characters of all time but the Sex and the City personality types of Carrie Bradshaw and her friends are interesting to examine years later. The show followed the four main characters and various other people in their lives as they pursued love and happiness in the big city. Part of what made the main character so entertaining was how different they were despite being such close friends. Many of the episodes dealt with how each of these women approached similar circumstances in their unique ways that reflected their personalities.

Aside from the four main characters, there were also a number of love interests in the show with their own personalities that either connected or clashed with the women. Each of these characters makes for a fun personality to dissect and one of the most effective ways of determining personality types is by looking at The Myers-Briggs® Type Indicator. The MBTI® is made up of sixteen different personality types with distinct qualities that help to define them. Looking at Sex and the City's characters, it isn't hard to see which of them fit with which characters.

Charlotte

ISFJ

Charlotte York is one of the easiest personalities to match on the show as her quirky qualities perfectly fit into the ISFJ personality type. People who fit into this category are known to be extremely classy individuals who care about presenting themselves in the most valuable and cherished light. They are also very conscious about being incredibly clean and well-groomed. Charlotte fits all these criteria with her obsession with tidiness but also with her impeccable fashion sense.

Being an ISFJ, Charlotte is in favor of traditional values which can sometimes clash with the other ladies of the group, especially Samantha. Yet despite her desire for tradition and a classic lifestyle that others might find a bit archaic, Charlotte, like most ISFJs, is open-minded enough to respect the opposing lifestyles that her other friends have.

Miranda

INTJ

Miranda is very much an INTJ personality type, otherwise known as "the mastermind". It can often feel as though the INTJ is on top of the world due to their strong work ethic and need for perfectionism, which is most certainly the case for Miranda. At various points in the show, she is seen leading a very successful career at a law firm while also balancing caring for a baby which is achieved through her determined personality.

Sometimes this personality type can come across as cold and emotionless, yet this is simply because they tend to lead with logic rather than their feelings. Out of the main characters, Miranda is often the most rational thinker. Yet once someone is about to get them to open up, the way that Steve is able to do with Miranda, they can make fantastic lovers.

Carrie

ENFJ

Carrie Bradshaw is the kind of person who wears her heart on her sleeve, which is very typical of the ENFJ personality type. They tend to be very expressive of their emotions, and to this personality type, finding love is one of the most essential parts of their identities. They can often feel lost and incomplete without someone special in their lives, and this is most certainly how Carrie tends to feel. This is especially true when it comes to Carrie's relationship with Mr. Big.

Although she loves Aiden, she doesn't get the same passion with him as she does with Big, and passion is an essential driving force of the ENFJ personality type. ENFJs also make excellent friends, which is made clear on the show, and they will do pretty much anything to make sure the people they care most about are happy and fulfilled.

Samantha

ESTP

Sex and the City's Samantha has the biggest personality of the main characters on the show, being very proud of who she is and putting it on display. Being an ESTP personality type, she is obsessed with getting the most out of life while she's still on this earth. Sometimes, this can cause her to do things that others might deem as inappropriate.

ESTPs are adventurous and driven individuals who refuse to lead a conventional or mundane lifestyle. They are often outspoken and they lead by the truth rather than sugar-coating everything around them. While the four main friends on the show love to discuss their love lives and intimate details with each other, it is Samanta's shocking frankness that even takes her closest friends by surprise and makes for some of the funniest moments on the show.

Mr. Big

ISTP

Mr. Big is a man of great mystery. He is constantly aloof and able to keep his cool, even during the most dramatic events. His masculine mystique reminds us a lot of the ISTP personality type, akin to that of James Bond. This persona is incredibly intriguing to others because they are constantly on the move and you never really know just what they're thinking.

This is why Carrie is so drawn to him because she loves the idea of trying to figure him out even though she never fully can. This is what keeps her coming back for more. He likes his independence, which makes for a bit of an issue early on in their relationship with his lack of commitment, but Carrie could always see the authentic side of him that most ISTP personalities have.

Trey MacDougal

ISTJ

Trey Macdougal is a person who means well, yet he and Charlotte just couldn't seem to make it work as much as they tried. He is very much an ISTJ because this personality type places an incredible amount of value on rules and tradition. Trey is known to do everything he can to make his mother, Bunny, proud and content, which seems to fit with his qualities of being a responsible and disciplined person.

Even if this means destroying his relationship with Charlotte in the end, he is the kind of person who always puts his family values first and foremost. This shows the ISTJ's stubbornness in his personality. Although Charlotte and Trey end up getting divorced, they manage to stay on civil terms and there is still love there between the two, approaching it practically.

Aidan

ISFP

Aidan is a kind-hearted person who is a country boy at heart who makes for Carrie's most important relationship aside from Mr. Big. He will do anything to make Carrie happy, yet sometimes this doesn't always end up working out according to plan. ISFP personality types are known for being gentle and loyal to their partners as well as their friends and family.

They are sometimes people-pleasers and often tend to be happy-go-lucky by nature which is certainly something that played into the breakup of Carrie and Aidan. Although he made for a great boyfriend, he was a bit too simple-minded and easygoing for Carrie who needed that spark of passion that only Big could supply her with. Yet even in that decision, Aidan showed her ISFP personality and took the breakup well, allowing him and Carrie to come in and out of each other's lives.

Harry

ENFP

Harry Goldenblatt walked into the world of Sex and the City like a ray of much-needed sunshine. Audiences were so used to most of the male lovers on the series being unavailable or too pushy in some way shape or form, and then Harry came around to prove that there are still great men out there who aren't taken. A big part of that was due to his likable, positive, and enthusiastic ENFP personality.

His warm and silly personality helps bring Charlotte out of her shell while Charlotte helps him be more organized and traditional. He is also shown to be an easygoing person which worked very well against Charlotte's more tightly wound ways. He was also to see the optimistic side of things and help to steer her in the same direction away from her anxieties.

Steve

ESFP

Steve is a loving and outgoing person on Sex and the City who is constantly lifting people's spirits with his happy-go-lucky personality. His ESFP personality shows through in these moments and in his romance with Miranda. He is a grounding force of positivity and enthusiasm with her over the course of the show, making her embrace her fun side, including kissing in the rain during their first date.

He wants to lead a simple life career-wise, yet his social life is very important to him and is a primary part of his identity. He cares a great deal about his friends and family and he will do anything to make sure those around him are satisfied. The fact that he is able to loosen up Miranda of all people proves how positive and warm he is.

Smith

ISFP

Of all of Samantha's boyfriends on Sex and the City, Smith is often seen as one of the best and his ISFP personality backs it up. He is a bit of a quiet and shy young man who is very sensitive which seems in contrast to a lot of the men Samantha seems interested in. It is also the opposite of her big and bold personality which is part of what makes them so fun as a couple.

Unlike many of Samantha's boyfriends, Smith's personality makes him incredibly loyal to her. ISFP personalities can often veer towards artistic expression and have creative minds. While Smith is initially just a reserved bartender, he later finds fame as a model and actor. Even after his success, he still remains a caring and selfless figure in Samantha's life which makes him all the more likable.
