The Real Housewives Of Disney: 5 Things SNL Got Right (& 5 Things They Missed The Mark On)

Summary The SNL skit "The Real Housewives of Disney" parodies both Disney princesses and The Real Housewives franchise impeccably.

The skit captures iconic Housewives aspects like taglines, dinner scenes, relationship drama, and interviews in a humorous way.

While Lindsay Lohan shines as Rapunzel, some aspects like the Cinderella drinking stereotype and Belle's wealth portrayal missed the mark.

Saturday Night Live is known for its terrific spoofs, but a famous SNL Disney Princess sketch not only parodies those iconic animated characters but also The Real Housewives franchise as well. Airing in 2012, "The Real Housewives of Disney" was a skit airing as part of the episode hosted by Lindsay Lohan. The spoof imagines various princess characters from Disney's canon together on a reality show and fits in nicely with all the tropes and cliches of The Real Housewives franchise.

The skit stars Lohan as Rapunzel, Kristen Wiig as Cinderella, Taran Killam as Prince Charming, Vanessa Bayer as Snow White, Nasim Pedrad as Princess Jasmine, and Abby Elliott as Belle. While it is great fun seeing these princesses brought to life on the show, the skit also appeals to fans of the reality show as they can see the different ways it nails the notable aspects of The Real Housewives while also seeing the moments that don't feel authentic. It makes for a great skit to revisit and enjoy compared to The Real Housewives series.

What SNL Got Right

The Famous Housewives Taglines

Real Housewives is a show that is not for humble or subtle personalities. It fully encourages housewives to be out there with their confident and even aggressive selves, and the introductory taglines featured each season are a great example of this. The introduction includes a lineup of the housewives with a short tagline describing their role in that season's show with plenty of attitude.

This is one of the best aspects of the SNL spoof as the actors deliver these taglines with so much sass while also making fun references to their Disney lore. Among the five princesses, the most memorable taglines come from Snow White's ("I'm the fairest of them all...until you cross me") and Princess Jasmine's ("I don't need to rub a lamp to get what I want"). They are the perfect amount of cheesy and confrontational.

The Iconic Dinner Scene Where Tears Are Shed

Arguments can happen at any time on The Real Housewives, but some of the best ones happen around a dinner table. When the drinks start flowing, and women start bringing up controversial topics, the best scenes come from it, and whenever there is a dinner scene, it is a cause for excitement among fans about what might happen next. The Disney skit wastes no time in having a dinner scene filled with the kind of passive-aggressive conflict the Housewives love.

Rapunzel is hosting a castle-warming party, and all the ladies are at the dinner and the problems start almost immediately. This includes Cinderella announcing a charity she is starting for dwarves even though that is Snow White's area and Belle boasting about her wealth even though Jasmine and Aladdin are broke after he used all their wishes from the Genie.

The Aspiring Singing Career

Fans can't blame some of the housewives for trying to launch spinoff careers outside of the show to earn even more income. These reality stars are often dismissed, especially with the problematic "housewives" label, but many of them have an entrepreneurial spirit and pursue other passions. Melissa Gorga (RHONJ), Kim Zolciak-Biermann (RHOA), Countess Luann (RHONY), and Erika Jayne (RHOBH) are just some of the housewives who have entertained the music industry while being filmed for Bravo.

Though some of the best Disney songs come from these princesses, this sketch has fun with the type of music that might generally come from the Housewives ground. Belle excitedly introduces her new single to her friends during the party with lyrics like "Be our guest, be our guest, caviar, Versace!" The moment is made to feel even more authentic with the way the camera captures the looks of fake enthusiasm and real judgment from the other princesses.

The Undercover Marital Issues

Relationships are a big part of reality TV storytelling and The Real Housewives franchise has no shortage of relationship drama. It's fascinating to see how other couples argue and get through dark times. The Real Housewives forces the stars to be upfront with a lot of these struggles in their relationships and their marriages which include divorces, breakups, allegations, and scandals.

SNL made sure to include relationship drama in their sketch. Cinderella and Prince Charming appear to be estranged with the prince taking no real interest in Cinderella. However, the most shocking and hilarious of the troubled relationships comes from Aladdin and Jasmine. Along with their financial issues, the camera catches Jasmine tearfully admitting to Snow White that she cheated on Aladdin with the talking parrot Iago.

The Hilarious Interviews

Some of the most memorable lines from The Real Housewives shows come out of the interview segments. While some of the stars of the show might not be willing to say things to each other's faces at times, when it is just them talking to the camera, that is when they can get brutally honest. There is a lot of insulting, taking behind people's backs, gossiping, and allowing the real drama to boil to the surface in these moments.

SNL understands the importance of these moments and includes some very memorable ones. They perfectly show how characters can stand up to each other when together only to bad mouth each other when being interviewed. The funniest moment comes when Rapunzel accuses Jasmine of cooking iconic Disney animal sidekick Apu the monkey in a casserole she served at a potluck.

Where SNL Missed The Mark

Prince Charming

Taran Killam does an amazing job of portraying Prince Charming from Cinderella. The Disney Princes are not always the most interesting characters, but Killam's take steals the show. His relationship with Cinderella is nothing like the fairy tale's, and it appears he has a wandering eye for men and has little interest in his wife.

Prince Charming is seen as the quintessential Disney love interest and the man any woman would dream of marrying so it is a lot of fun reimagining the character as gay. Besides the character change from the original Disney canon, another small thing that misses the mark for The Real Housewives fans is how involved Charming is in the drama. On The Real Housewives, husbands get involved in some of the arguments, but Prince Charming appears to be as dramatic as the women are.

Housewives Have Stunning Interview Looks

Another well-known aspect of The Real Housewives interview segments is the outfits worn by the stars. Despite the fact that they are just sitting to talk to the producers, these stars clearly want to look their best at all times which means they are dressed in fancy and eye-catching outfits. They would certainly not be wearing the same thing that they were already seen in earlier in the episode.

In this instance, it seems like the SNL skit was looking to remain more faithful to the Disney characters than to The Real Housewives shows. As such, these iconic Disney princesses are only seen in their famous outfits from the movie and nothing else. The Real Housewives would never allow for only one outfit with no costume changes, but the skit is trying to hold onto that Disney element as well.

Lindsay Lohan As Rapunzel

A skit like this is about strong writing of the concept, but it also relies heavily on the performers to pull it off. The female characters on Saturday Night Live at this time were particularly strong and did an excellent job of both capturing the necessary elements of the Disney Princesses that they were playing as well as feeling authentic to the vibe of The Real Housewives. However, the skit had a weak link in host Lindsay Lohan.

Lohan had proven herself to be a very gifted actor and comedic performer plenty of times in the past. She even made for an excellent SNL host during her first time on the show, memorably appearing in Debbie Downer, one of the best SNL skits of all time. However, Lohan's performance in this skit was off and she did not seem to be committing to the joke like the rest of the cast was, failing to sell the punchlines effectively.

Cinderella's Drinking Problem

Partying and cocktails are certainly commonplace in The Real Housewives shows. There have even been moments in which genuine concern about alcoholic abuse or problematic drinking has been raised on the show, such as with Kim and Kyle Richards. However, these issues are always addressed in a serious way with people trying to help resolve them.

This is not the case with Kristen Wiig's take on Cinderella which provides some very funny moments but doesn't feel very accurate to the show. Cinderella quickly establishes herself as the wild card of the group with her hilarious tagline "And I’m a huge fucking mess!" Her antics get a big laugh in the skit, but it feels more like a drunken stereotype than something that would be seen in The Real Housewives.

Belle's Boombox

The Real Housewives stars love to live a life of excess and impressive wealth. They are not shy about flaunting their big purchases, and in fact, they seem to take pride in showing each other up in these matters. It is one of the uglier sides of the show as any sign of frugality or being cautious with their spending is seen as a weakness or a sign that they don't really belong in this high society social circle.

Though it is a small detail that could easily be overlooked in the skit, this focus on wealth is betrayed in the scene in which Belle decides to premiere her new song. She plays it on a boombox which seems a surprisingly meager option for a princess who was just bragging about $25,000 earrings. While this was 2012, an iPod deck would have been a more realistic choice for a woman with extravagant tastes like hers.
