Sara Sallam Takes Cues from George Orwell's 1984 Novel

Sara Sallam's anti-tech jewelry is inspired by George Orwell's famous 1984 novel. The literary work is heavily cited in contemporary cultures as many recognize the dystopian social environment that invasive technology—such as facial recognition algorithms—can bring about.

The Brooklyn-based designer focused on creating provocative jewelry that will not conceal one's features but will be substantial in blocking tech-enabled surveillance. This includes facial recognition, heartbeat detection, and gait-tracking, all of which can be utilized to militarize and enhance state power to stifle dissent. The anti-tech jewelry collection is appropriately dubbed 'Orwell.' It consists of three incredibly chic pieces that can be worn on the face, chest, and foot. The designs are not only effective but also have a captivating aesthetic, allowing them to be functional, radical, and stylish.
