An elderly man has survived unhurt after he was spotted hanging upside down from a 10-storey window in China.

Terrifying footage shows the resident helplessly dangling his arms in the air while swinging from the flat's exterior at nearly 100 feet above the ground in Chinese eastern province Shandong.

It is believed that the pensioner, who has Alzheimer's disease, had accidentally climbed out of his flat after being locked at home alone by his family.

He was rescued by firefighters on Friday after neighbours spotted the elderly man hanging from the high-rise residential building in the city of Yantai.

The local fire brigade and police were called to the scene on the morning of July 24 after receiving a report from local residents.

Heart-stopping footage shows the half-naked pensioner swinging upside down from the 10-storey flat as his feet appeared to be hooked by the windowsill.

An terrified onlooker can be heard shouting: 'Hang in there! The police is coming very soon!'

The authorities did not specify the height but a 10-storey flat is usually 30 metres (98 feet) above the ground.

The Alzheimer's patient appeared to be unhurt after he was carefully lifted back inside by the rescuers. The pensioner was believed to have accidentally climbed out of his flat on July 24

A community manager told the rescuers that the pensioner with Alzheimer's had been locked home by his son and daughter-in-law who were left for work.

The family was forced to do so after the elderly resident often wandered around by himself and had went missing before.
