Natasha Richardson's son Micheál, 25, says he 'still doesn't comprehend' her death

Natasha Richardson's son has revealed he still can't fully 'comprehend' his mother's death more than a decade ago.

Micheál Richardson, 25, whose father is the actor Liam Neeson, 68, was just 13 years old when his actress mother died in 2009 after suffering a head injury while skiing.

Speaking to Vanity Fair, Micheál, who changed his name from Neeson to Richardson two years ago in tribute, told how he 'didn't deal' with his mother's death at the time and is still processing his loss 11 years later.

He said: 'I think the pain was a little too overwhelming. I think the mind is very powerful, and subconsciously, or unconsciously, it can protect you. That’s what it did when she passed. I just pushed it aside and didn’t want to deal with it.

'I don’t, even still, think that I’ve fully comprehended it, and that seems to be a similar journey to a lot of people I’ve spoken to.'

Richardson is preparing to star alongside his father in a film that mirrors their own experience of loss.

Made in Italy, written by James D’Arcy, tells the story of a son and father who are still grieving the death of a mother and wife when they reunite in Italy to sell the family's holiday home.

Like Richardson, his character is following in his father's footsteps into the creative industries.

He said the parallels between himself and his character were apparent as soon as he had finished reading the script.

The film is scheduled for release next month.

Her family made the heartbreaking decision to switch off her life support machine after doctors said there was no hope of a recovery.

An autopsy concluded that Natasha, who took a tumble during a skiing lesson, had died from a build-up of blood in the brain known as an epidural haematoma.
