Indiana Woman Is Accused of Driving Into Demonstrators
Suddenly, the car began to accelerate. The woman who had her hands on the car scrambled onto the hood, and Mr. Stewart said he clung to the driver’s side as it sped down the street for about two blocks, running at least one red light.
Mr. Stewart said he struggled to lift himself up so he would not get dragged beneath the wheels.
“I had my left hand on her driver’s side windshield wiper, and my right hand was pressed on the windshield, just trying to give myself some leverage,” he said. “But I was also looking around to make sure that she wasn’t hitting anyone.”
As the car sped down the street, he said, he told the other demonstrator, whom he did not know, that she was going be OK, and she replied that she was hanging on for her life.
When the car took a sharp turn, Mr. Stewart said he and the other demonstrator were thrown off. Mr. Stewart said his injuries were minor, but the woman seemed to be more seriously hurt. Emergency responders arrived quickly, he said, and lifted her onto a stretcher.
Ms. Bennett could not immediately be reached for comment on Thursday, and a lawyer representing her declined to comment.
The police said they had found her at a motel in Scottsburg on Wednesday evening with the man who had been a passenger in her car on Monday. The man was interviewed and released, the authorities said.
On Wednesday, a man who was accused of driving into a protest in Seattle over the weekend, killing one demonstrator, was charged with vehicular homicide, vehicular assault and reckless driving. Another protester died after being hit by a vehicle in Bakersfield, Calif., in June.
