The Battlestar Galactica Reboot: Will It Happen? Everything We Know
Plans to reboot Battlestar Galactica have hit a snag, and now the entire project to bring the classic show back to TV has been stalled. Based on the short-lived 1970s cult classic, Battlestar Galactica follows a group of humans who survive a nuclear catastrophe at their native interplanetary home known as the United Colonies of Kobol. While traveling on the titular craft, the humans' main goal is to avoid being tracked down by their robot enemies, the Cylons.
Though significantly more popular than the original, the SYFY Channel version of Battlestar still only ran for four seasons, prompting fans to demand additional seasons. What's more, the SYFY version of Battlestar Galactica ended with an epilogue that involved a significant time jump, one that wasn't well-received. With that in mind, a revival has long been in high demand, and with the rise of streaming, a show like Battlestar Galactica can finally establish itself as something more than a cult classic.

Peacock's cancelation could ultimately be a blessing, and Battlestar Galactica's reboot could go to a more receptive host.
After crafting the project for the better part of five years, the latest news confirms that the development of the Battlestar Galactica reboot has been canceled by Peacock. In a major blow to the hopes of bringing the short-lived sci-fi series back, NBC's streaming service has pulled the plug on plans to host the series. Fortunately, Battlestar's studio, UCP, is intent on shopping the property around to other streaming services. Peacock's cancelation could ultimately be a blessing, and Battlestar Galactica's reboot could go to a more receptive host.
The Battlestar Galactica Reboot Is Not Confirmed
Peacock Pulled Out Of The Project In August 2024
Though the details weren't all revealed then, the current iteration of the Battlestar Galactica reboot has been in the works since 2019. From the outset, Mr. Robot creator Sam Esmail was attached as producer, but the series has since gone through some creative shakeups behind the scenes. Screenwriter Michael Lesslie was tapped to serve as showrunner in 2020, but he has since departed.
In early 2024, Battlestar Galactica hired a new showrunner in the form of Derek Simonds, who is best known for creating the series, The Sinner. Though the course of the new series had seemingly been righted by the resolution of the Hollywood strikes of 2023 and the hiring of a new showrunner, Peacock ultimately canceled plans to develop the show in August 2024. No reason was given for the cancelation, but UCP is determined to shop Battlestar Galactica to other streamers.

The New Battlestar Galactica Is Not A True Reboot

Though almost nothing is known about the story of sci-fi revival, it has been revealed that it will take place in the same universe as the 2004 Battlestar Galactica. This means it could be a direct follow-up to the SYFY Channel series, and allow Esmail and company to negate the controversial time jump that ended the show in 2009. Theoretically, a lot of exciting things took place in that mysterious period, and that's likely where the new show will fit in.
On the other hand, taking place within the same universe doesn't necessarily mean it will see all the same characters and situations again, but could instead tell a parallel story. While nothing has been confirmed, the new Battlestar Galactica could be a prequel that takes place before the 2004 show, or it could jump forward in time and explore the future of the galaxy long after the hit SYFY Channel series.
