Vikings: Bjorn's Relationship Timeline, Season By Season

Summary Bjorn Ironside had many wives throughout Vikings, influenced by his father's behavior.

His relationships with Thorunn, Torvi, Sneafrid, and Gunnhild all had their complexities.

Bjorn's final season saw him married to two wives, Gunnhild and Ingrid, in a unique arrangement.

While most of the main characters in Vikings have more than one great love throughout the show (Ragnar, Aslaug, and Lagertha being the most famous love triangle), few characters had as many as Bjorn Ironside. It seems, at times, there was a new Bjorn Ironside wife almost every season of the show, although that is a slight exaggeration. Vikings initially followed Ragnar Lothbrok and his Viking brothers, but as the series progressed, it changed its focus to Ragnar’s sons — Bjorn, Ubbe, Hvitserk, Sigurd, and Ivar — and their journeys.

For Bjorn, he does fall for many women (and plenty of women fall for him), which he likely got from watching his father as a child. It is also quite surprising, as Bjorn was angry with his father for cheating on his mother, but then ended up taking on many different lovers throughout his own life as a warrior. He attempts to be a good husband and father as best he can. He doesn't cheat on the women he cares for (unlike his father). There are so many Bjorn Ironside wives because he lost some in battle, and his final two marriages happened at the same time.

Vikings is available to stream on Netflix.

Season One - A Child Between Two Parents

Bjorn Witnesses His Father Cheating On His Mother

Bjorn clearly does not have any romantic relationships in the first season of Vikings, because he is still a child at this point in time. However, his parents' relationship obviously affects how he approaches his own relationships in the future. One of the major events that occurs this season and has an impact is on his trip to Gotaland with Ragnar — the trip where Ragnar meets Aslaug. This means that Bjorn sees his father cheating on Lagertha with Aslaug, and he is absolutely furious about it.

It's clear that, even as a child, Bjorn sees infidelity as unacceptable.

It's clear that, even as a child, Bjorn sees infidelity as unacceptable. This teaches him how he will deal with relationships in the future. It is also a moment for young Bjorn that destroys his life. Ragnar chooses to leave Lagertha and marry Aslaug which tears their family apart. Even years later, this affects Bjorn as he has strong rivalries with his brothers - all of whom are Aslaug's children with Ragnar. The fact his mother later murders Aslaug is another reason that this family is so damaged in the end.

Season Two - In Love With Thorunn

The Former Slave Is Bjorn's First Wife

In season two, Bjorn falls in love for the first time, with Thorunn (Gaia Weiss), an enslaved woman in Kattegat. There is a time jump between Vikings season 1 and 2, and Bjorn goes from being a young boy to a man and a warrior, and both sides of him are visible when he falls for Thorunn. At this point, he is unsure of himself, and not quite sure how to pursue her, especially given her status in Kattegat. Lagertha, seeing how he feels, frees her, and Thorunn starts training as a warrior.

Thorunn becomes a shieldmaiden and goes alongside Bjorn, and the couple finally get married.

This allows a relationship to blossom between the two as something closer to equals. Thorunn becomes a shieldmaiden and goes alongside Bjorn, and the couple finally get married. This allows him the first chance at real love in his life, and it puts her on equal ground alongside one of Ragnar's sons. However, by the next season, their relationship begins to fall apart, and it isn't due to anything that Ragnar did wrong. Instead, it is due to Thorunn's goal to become a warrior and the tragedy that befell her.

Season Three - Falls For Torvi

Bjorn Has A Child With Thorunn, But Ends Up With Torvi

Vikings season three is difficult one for Bjorn's relationships — he and Thorunn fall apart, and he falls for Torvi, even though she is married. Early in the season, things are going well for Bjorn and Thorunn, and she is pregnant with their child. However, everything goes wrong when she is injured in battle. Thorunn survives but is left with a large scar that changes the shape of her face. After she has their baby (Siggy), she becomes increasingly withdrawn and unhappy and shuts Bjorn out as well. Eventually, Thorunn leaves Kattegat and is never seen again.

While the life he might have had with Thorunn and Siggy falls apart, Bjorn finds comfort in the arms of Torvi

Bjorn's child, Siggy, ends up neglected and eventually dies in an accident. While the life he might have had with Thorunn and Siggy falls apart, Bjorn finds comfort in the arms of Torvi, who is married to Erlender. The two slowly fall for each other, and when Thorunn tells him to be with someone else, he does. It's not an easy relationship, though. Bjorn is in love with Thorunn and is hurt that she shut him out. Torvi also struggling with Erlender, who treats her badly and becomes Bjorn's enemy.

Season Four - Has A Family With Torvi

Bjorn Has His Longest Marriage With Torvi

The fourth season of Vikings starts with the resolution of the situation with Erlender, as Bjorn takes Torvi away from Hedeby, and the two begin an official relationship. Torvi ends up murdering Erlender to protect Bjorn, and because he threatened the life of her son. This is another season with a time jump, and happily, Bjorn and Torvi stay together for the entirety of this jump and have two children of their own (Hali and Asa).

By the end of their marriage, Bjorn has lost interest in Torvi, but he won't cheat on her.

For many fans, this was the best relationship that Bjorn was in — and it was certainly the longest and the most stable of all his marriages. Throughout this season, the two are clearly in love, battling together, side by side, and fighting for Lagertha. Because Torvi is Lagertha's right hand, there are also no family conflicts, and when things start to cool off between them, it is heartbreaking to see. By the end of their marriage, Bjorn has lost interest in Torvi, but he won't cheat on her. Instead, she frees him.

Season Five - Leaves Torvi For Sneafrid, Then Falls For Gunnhild

Bjorn Bounces Between Relationships In Season 5

Things change repeatedly in Vikings season 5 when Torvi frees Bjorn from their marriage and he marries again. This Bjorn Ironside wife is Sneafrid, the daughter of King Svase, and one of Bjorn's most passionate relationships. When he meets Sneafrid, he is enamored and when Torvi sees this too, she speaks with Bjorn and tells him that she understands, and they can end their connection. His time with Sneafrid, though, is short-lived. The two marry, but she is almost immediately killed in battle, and he is left alone. He then flees for his life, to England.

Originally on the opposing side, Bjorn and Gunnhild quickly form a connection, and Bjorn ends the season in a relationship with her.

There, he has a brief fling with Elsewith, but nothing comes of it, and eventually, he meets Gunnhild (Ragga Ragnars). Originally on the opposing side, Bjorn and Gunnhild quickly form a connection, and Bjorn ends the season in a relationship with her. She ends up becoming Bjorn's one true love and they become equals and partners. Gunnhild is a perfect match, as she is a strong warrior and a capable ruler, and she becomes a steadying force in his life, while also fighting by his side when needed.

Season Six - Married To Two Wives (Gunnhild & Ingrid)

Gunnhild Allowed Bjorn To Marry A Second Wife To Have Kids

Even in the final season of Vikings, there was still one more Bjorn Ironside wife to come. However, he maintains his marriage to Gunnhild at the same time as marrying a second wife, Ingrid. For most of the season, it is clear that Gunnhild and Bjorn are perfectly matched. However, Gunnhild becomes frustrated that she is unable to bear a child for Bjorn, and when she becomes pregnant, she loses the baby during childbirth. Wanting him to have children, and seeing he has an attraction to Ingrid, she accepts Bjorn marrying a second wife.

Unlike his father, he never sleeps with any woman without the permission of a current wife or partner.

When Ragner proposed this arrangement to Lagertha, she left (with Bjorn), and now Bjorn ends up in the same situation himself, but it worked out. This is because, unlike his father, he never sleeps with any woman without the permission of a current wife or partner - and this may be part of the reason that he had two wives at the time of his death. Of course, it also comes down to Gunnhild's personality, and her willingness to accept this so that Bjorn can be happy, and she can be secure in her position on Vikings, too.
