Where To Find (& Kill) Gnats in Grounded
Flying insects called Gnats are abundant creatures in Grounded that you can find and kill for food and essential crafting materials. These passive animals may not be trying to harm you, but you need every resource you can get to survive as a shrunk-down character in the backyard wilderness. Thankfully, there are ways to trick elusive Gnats into approaching you for an easy hunt.
Unlike other enemies like Antlions in Grounded, Gnats are flying creatures that often move in erratic and unpredictable patterns around the map. This annoying movement can make Gnats difficult to track down and hit with ranged weapons from your arsenal. Gnats can also be distracting creatures who could accidentally nudge into your character, knocking them off a ledge or throwing them off in a different fight.
Where To Find Gnats
Search For Different Variants
Gnats can be found buzzing around in the skies of the Central Grasslands, Flooded Zone, and Oak Hill biomes in the air. Swarms of these bugs usually gather around light sources, like porch lights or torches that you use during the night. Two variants of normal Gnats change the characteristics of these animals slightly, but neither will actively harm your character by attacking them for immediate damage.
Infected Gnats are found within Haze biomes and will more actively try to bump into characters that come near them. Despite this aggressiveness, these Gnats won't actively harm you, unlike other animals such as hostile Larva animals in Grounded. Meaty Gnats found near the Trash Heap will only deal damage because they emit a gaseous aura, similar to large rotten food, that actively hurts your character over time.
Meaty Gnats can be approached when you wear a Gas Mask or drink some Gastro Goo to become temporarily immune to the gaseous aura of this Gnat variant.
How To Lure & Kill Gnats
Tempt Them With Food
Due to how hard Gnats are to shoot out of the air, the best strategy for killing them is to use Spoiled Meat Slurry to lure them toward the ground. Putting Spoiled Meat into a Grinder will make this Slurry, which you can place onto an exposed spot where it'll be easy to shoot or strike the bugs as they eat. This process is also used to tame Gnats in Grounded if you are trying to look for a mount to explore biomes.
Defeating any type of Gnat will reward you with Gnat Fuzz and Raw Gnat Meat most of the time, but there is a small chance you get Apple Bits, Billy Hog Bite, or Cookie Sandwich Bits from these creatures as a rare drop. Gnat Fuzz can be used as a crafting component for a Sprig Bow, a Stuffed Bombardier, or even a Gas Mask used to approach Meaty Gnats over by the Trash Heap.
Raw Gnat Meat can be booked to make a Gnat Roast or dried into a Gant Jerky for different sources of food. With the proper setup, you can easily find and kill as many Gnats as you want in Grounded for these important foods and crafting materials.
