Herbert's Dune universe is vastly expansive, meaning it can be difficult to sort through all the major houses and factions that play a role in the story. The first Dune movie introduces several key players, as does its sequel, though some Dune: Part Two book changes make it so that the entire histories and motives of each faction are not explored during the film.

By the time of Dune: Part Two's climactic ending, the fates of several major houses hang in the balance. As such, understanding the six major houses and factions is essential for viewers to experience the story of Dune 2 completely. Similarly, the intricacies of the politics and factions at play allow Dune: Part Two's Paul Atreides villain-hero debate to come to fruition. Like its predecessor, Dune: Part Two functions best when the extensive histories and motivations of its central factions are fresh in the mind.

This is why the Emperor went into league with House Harkonnen and helped exterminate the Atreides on Arrakis in Dune: Part One. In Dune: Part Two, Paul and his Fremen allies set out to avenge Leto and return the Atreides to prominence.

The Fremen Are Instrumental In Dune: Part Two

The Fremen Home Planet Is Arrakis

Close

In the Dune movies, a clear distinction between the ideologies of the Fremen who live in southern and northern Arrakis is established. Since the Northern Fremen live closer to Arrakeen, the events of Dune: Part One and Dune: Part Two eventually ripple down upon them. This has made them more unwelcoming towards outsiders, and after witnessing immense destruction at the hands of colonizers, they have also grown more calloused. Over the years, younger Fremen like Chani have struggled to hold on to the spiritual and religious beliefs passed on by their ancestors because of all the disruption they have witnessed.

While the Southern Freman have faced a fair share of challenges themselves, their fight for survival has less to do with the colonizers and more with the extreme weather conditions in the south of Arrakis. The forces of nature in the southern part of the planet are so unforgiving that the Harkonnens initially assumed that it was uninhabitable. The Fremen, however, sustain themselves by primarily living in the Sietches underground. Without much exposure to the colonizers, they hold on to their spirituality and firmly believe in Dune: Part Two's Lisan al-Gaib prophecy.

Other Notable Great Houses In Dune

Close

Although the six houses and factions above play central roles in Dune: Part One and Dune: Part Two, the franchise holds other notable families. Some of the characters in the two movies belong to these houses, though they may swear fealty to others. This proves how expansive the lore and political mythology of the Dune franchise is, something that could be further explored in Dune: Part Three's story.

A third installment in the Dune franchise was confirmed to be in development in April 2024 after the success of Dune: Part Two.

House Ginaz

One of the other major houses in Dune is House Ginaz. House Ginaz has long been an ally to House Atreides and has a connection to one of Dune: Part One's major characters. The character in question is Duncan Idaho, played by Jason Momoa. House Ginaz is renowned for its Swordmaster School, which trains warriors to be adept in combat and strong enough to rival the Sardauker. Momoa's Idaho was a Swordmaster in the Dune novel, meaning the same is likely for Dune: Part One.

House Moritani

A primary enemy of House Ginaz was House Moritani. At some point in the reign of House Corrino, House Ginaz and House Moritani fought in the War of Assassins. House Corrino took the side of Moritani, while the Atreides family aided their allies, Ginaz. With the aid of the Imperium, House Moritani won the war against Gitaz.

House Ordos

Another major house in the world of Dune is House Ordos. However, where other houses become involved in the political aspects of the Imperium, House Ordos' motivations are simply self-preservation and greed. As such, Ordos' goals were only to sustain the elite nature of the house by earning revenue and thus, reputation.

Other major houses in the Dune universe were only formed after the events of Dune: Part Two, likely to be explored in future film installments.

House Richese & House Vernius

The two final major houses in the Dune Imperium were House Richese and House Vernius. These two houses were known for creating, developing, and selling machinery, resulting in a great rivalry between the two. However, House Vernius was widely known to craft better machines than Richese, resulting in the former creating Heighliners - ships primarily used for the transportation of people and equipment - for the Spacing Guild.

Who Rules The Great Houses In Dune

The Rule Of The Great Houses Is Primarily Split Between Two People In Dune's Main Stories

Close

Concerning who rules the Great Houses in Dune, that duty falls to the imperial house of the Imperium. For millennia, House Corrino served as the leader of the Imperium. House Corrino ruled for thousands of years, manipulating the politics of the other houses to retain their power. This was established in Dune: Part One by the Emperor's manipulation of House Atreides and House Harkonnen. The Emperor feared the power that House Atreides was gaining in the Imperium, thus formulating a plan for House Harkonnen to dispatch Leto Atreides and his family.

As of Dune: Part Two's ending, Paul Atreides is essentially the new Emperor of the Imperium...

This plan seemed to have worked at first, with Christopher Walken's Emperor Shaddam Corinno IV continuing his rule over the Imperium. In Dune: Part Two, however, the rule of the Imperium changed hands thanks to Paul Atreides. Paul's actions in Dune: Part Two saw him remove the threat of House Harkonnen, take Shaddam's daughter Irulan's hand in marriage, and stamp his authority over the other royal houses. As of Dune: Part Two's ending, Paul Atreides is essentially the new Emperor of the Imperium and the other Great Houses.

What Is The Landsraad In Dune?

The Landsraad Enabled The Great Houses To Form Dune's Imperium

Finally, the last main element of the Dune franchise that is connected to the Great Houses is the Landsraad. The Landsraad is essentially a council that enables the many Great Houses of the Imperium to come together. The Landsraad Council met regularly, allowing the Great Houses and their representatives to speak to one another, form trade deals, create alliances, or declare official feuds via the process of "kanly." While Dune: Part Two did not feature the Landsraad, it remains an integral function in the political machinations of the Great Houses.
