Army Of The Dead 2: Netflix Cancellation & Everything We Know About The Zack Snyder Sequel

After years of waiting for Army of the Dead 2 to materialize, Netflix has quietly pulled the plug on the entire franchise. Released in 2021, Army of the Dead follows a group of gutsy mercenaries who journey into zombie-infested Las Vegas to attempt an improbable heist. Made with Zack Snyder's signature blend of genres, Army of the Dead took the best of the zombie and heist films and combined them in a one-of-a-kind package. The film had franchise potential from the start, but plans seemingly stalled right out the gate.

Middling reviews weren't enough to slow down the hype around Snyder's Army of the Dead, and Netflix was seemingly willing to throw anything at the director and write him a blank check to explore his ideas. However, just as Snyder was ramping up to turn Army of the Dead into the streamer's next big moneymaking franchise, he shifted gears and began working on his epic Rebel Moon project. After his sci-fi universe seemingly stalled as well, Netflix eventually canceled plans for the Army of the Dead franchise.

Army of the Dead 2 as well as the planned spinoff will likely never happen, as Netflix has pulled the plug on the entire operation.

Years after giving Zack Snyder the world, the latest news confirms that Netflix has reportedly canceled the entire Army of the Dead franchise. Hoping for a lucrative years-long partnership, Netflix hastily green-lit Snyder's Army of the Dead (though the sequel was never official), which emboldened the filmmaker to make big plans for the series' future. Unfortunately, Army of the Dead 2 as well as the planned spinoff will likely never happen, as Netflix has pulled the plug on the entire operation.

The Sequel Was Never Confirmed

From the outset, Army of the Dead 2 seemed to be taking a back seat to Snyder's other ambitious ideas, and each new update about the planned spinoffs like Lost Vegas made the sequel seem less likely. Then, Snyder turned his attention to the Rebel Moon franchise and all the ideas for Army of the Dead were put on the backburner. Now, Netflix has pulled the plug on Snyder's zombie franchise, meaning the long-awaited Army of the Dead 2 will probably never be made.

The prequel film, Army of Thieves also debuted in 2021.

Some Work Was Done Before The Cancelation

Despite the fact that the project has since been put on the backburner, Zack Snyder has teased Army of the Dead 2 and even revealed a bit of the massive scale of the planned film. When it comes to the sequel, Snyder said "My idea for Army 2 is Planet of the Dead...so super excited about it". Snyder's Planet of the Dead concept was intriguing and it suggested a massive jump in scale for the now-canceled zombie franchise.

Alongside the sequel, Snyder has also clarified that a lot of work was done on the animated series, though that project is presumably canceled as well. "We were working on – and are trying to get back up – our Army animated series" Snyder said, "We recorded the whole thing, we recorded all the voices – Christian Slater, all these cool people. Super fun". Even after all that work, Netflix's cancelation is likely the end of the story.

Perhaps the most surprising reveal that Zack Snyder provided about the Army of the Dead franchise is that it shared a universe with Rebel Moon. Snyder mentioned that a character from Rebel Moon was slated to appear in the Army of the Dead animated series, and the introduction of an interdimensional portal directly links both franchises. Unfortunately, the cancelation of the franchise means the crossover will likely never happen. Furthermore, the cancelation not only makes Army of the Dead 2 seem incredibly unlikely, it also puts the Rebel Moon franchise in jeopardy.
