The Best Movies And TV Shows Arriving On Netflix In May 2024
Close
A Man in Full
Jeff Daniels has already found plenty of acclaim on television with roles in The Newsroom and American Rust and he returns to the small screen in an exciting new limited series coming to Netflix on May 2. A Man in Full comes from another television legend, David E. Kelley, and stars Daniels as a real estate mogul who is going bankrupt, fending off the vultures circling his fallen empire, and he attempts to rebuild.
Daniels is great at playing ambitious and determined men who do not realize how flawed they are. He is also backed by an amazing cast that includes Diane Lane, Lucy Liu, and Regina King. With Kelley’s name behind everything from Ally McBeal to Big Little Lies, there is always anticipation to see what his next television project is and A Man in Full has the feel of a prestige cable drama rather than a Netflix series.
John Mulaney Presents: Everybody’s in LA
John Mulaney is responsible for some of the best stand-up comedy specials on Netflix and has emerged as one of the most popular comedians working right now. In addition to his work on stage, he also delivered the hilarious Oh, Hello on Broadway and the Sack Lunch Bunch on Netflix. With that track record, there is a lot of excitement about his latest Netflix project even if not much is known about it.
John Mulaney Presents: Everybody’s in LA is a new six-episode event with each episode streaming live on Netflix starting on May 3. The special takes place during the Netflix is a Joke comedy special with Mulaney teasing a lot of celebrity guests as he boasts that almost every funny person in the world will be in town during this week. Though it is unclear what format the show will take, possibly an interview-style show or standup set, it is sure to bring the laughs.
Unfrosted
Another hugely popular comedian is coming to Netflix with a new project on May 3. Jerry Seinfeld is an icon of the stand-up world as well as the co-creator of one of the greatest sitcoms of all time, Seinfeld. Though he has mostly stuck to the standup stage since the show ended, Seinfeld returns with a new movie that also marks his directorial debut. Inspired by one of Seinfeld’s standup bits, Unfrosted is a hilarious reimaging of the invention of the Pop Tart.
Seinfeld is a master at examining one common aspect of society and finding all the funny and strange details of it that people notice but don’t really think about. It will be interesting to see how he manages to maintain that over the course of a feature-length movie. It will also be fun to see Seinfeld acting once again and he is backed by an amazing cast that includes Melissa McCarthy, Hugh Grant, Peter Dinklage, and Bill Burr, among many others.
Bodkin (Season 1)
Netflix is full of true-crime documentaries but a new series examines the people behind these investigations and the culture surrounding them. Bodkin is a dark comedy premiering on Netflix on May 9 and starring Will Forte as the leader of a trio of true-crime podcasts. Looking for a new mystery for their show, they travel to a remote Irish village and begin digging into a cold case.
The premise might sound like an Irish-set version of Only Murders in the Building, however, it takes a much darker and satirical look at this kind of story. It looks to examine the fascinating and potentially parasitic nature of people who profit off of such crimes and tragedies while also showing that there is indeed a mystery worth digging into. Forte is always a fun presence on screen, especially with his being a more serious role.
Archer (Seasons 1-14)
Along with a lot of Netflix Originals that get fans excited, there are also some great established shows that get added to the library over time. One of the latest series that comes to Netflix in its entirety on May 13 is the adult animated comedy, Archer. The series is a sendup of the spy genre, following the skilled yet self-centered and dim secret agent Sterling Archer who saves the world along with his dysfunctional spy agency.
The series is a hilarious spoof that has a lot of fun with its take on spy movie conventions and tropes. There are also some genuinely fun action sequences in the show and plots that could appear on the big screen. However, it is the wacky and colorful characters that populate this world that makes Archer worthwhile and it makes for the perfect binge-worthy show with 14 seasons to enjoy on Netflix in May.
Bridgerton (Season 3)
Certainly the most anticipated returning show to Netflix is Bridgerton which kicks off its third season on May 16. The series perfectly caters to fans of the period romances with scandalous and alluring relationships and complex characters within the upper-class and sophisticated society. The third season picks up with the romance brewing between Penelope Featherington (Nicola Coughlan) and Colin Bridgerton (Luke Newton).
Each season of the show has captured the attention of Netflix fans and become one of the most talked-about shows on the platform. With certain revelations and developments from last year as well as the show adapting the fourth book in Julia Quinn's series, there is a lot to get excited about for Bridgerton season 3. However, fans should be aware that this season is split into two parts with the second half of Bridgerton season 3 arriving in June.
Atlas
Jennifer Lopex returns to Netflix for a new and exciting sci-fi action movie coming on May 24. Atlas is set in a future in which robots and artificial intelligence are widely used with Lopez starring as a data analyst who has a mistrust of AI. She is sent on a mission to retrieve a renegade robot only for the mission to go horribly wrong and have her fighting for her life while also having to rely on the technology she disdains.
Seeing Lopez back in the action genre is highly anticipated and the movie looks to be a grand and exciting blockbuster from Netflix. Lopez is also joined by a solid supporting cast that includes Sterling K. Brown, Mark Strong, and Simu Liu in a villain role. It has the potential to be a significant hit for the streaming service.
Eric
Benedict Cumberbatch comes to Netflix with a brand-new limited series on May 30 to close out the month. Eric also sounds like it will be one of the most unique titles on Netflix this month as Cumberbatch stars as a puppeteer who finds his mental state deteriorating when his young son is kidnapped. However, as he begins to search for his child, he finds an ally in the form of a monster puppet named Eric that his son created.
It is a very intriguing premise that looks to combine an enticing mystery story with some surrealism as well as a character study of a complicated protagonist. This could provide Cumberbatch with one of his most exciting roles in what could be one of the best Netflix limited series to hit the platform in some time.
