Did All American's Billy Baker Die In Real Life?
Summary Billy Baker's death in All American season 5 was not based on a real-life tragedy. It was a creative decision made by the producers and Taye Diggs.
The character of Billy Baker in the show is loosely based on Carter Paysinger, who was Spencer Paysinger's uncle and football coach in real life.
The real-life Carter Paysinger is still alive and has had a very different life from the fictional character Billy Baker on All American.
The unthinkable happened in All American season 5 — Billy Baker, played by Taye Diggs, died during a bus crash, and everyone was left to mourn their favorite coach. The CW series is based on the true story of Spencer Paysinger, a former NFL linebacker, who serves as a consulting producer on the show. All American takes inspiration from Paysinger's life and career, meaning that some characters are also based on real-life people, including Billy.
In All American season 5, episode 11, the South Crenshaw football team traveled to a combine to flaunt their skills to college coaches. On the way back, their bus blew a tire and ended up teetering on the edge of a cliff. At first, viewers were made to believe that everyone got out safely, but then the coach realized that Jabari Long was still inside. Billy saved Jabari but died in the process. Since All American based the fictional coach on a real person, some wondered if Billy Baker's death was inspired by an actual tragedy.

Billy Baker Didn't Die In Real Life
The Death Of Coach Baker Was Invented For The Show
Close
All American takes plenty of creative liberties when it comes to telling Spencer Paysinger's story, including Coach Baker's death in season 5. The fictional character's death was not based on something that happened in the NFL player's life. Instead, the series included the devastating Billy Baker death in season 5 because Taye Diggs was ready to say goodbye to All American. While speaking with TVLine, Diggs shared:
"I was having a great time. It was just a feeling that I got [that I was ready to leave], and I just honored that feeling. It was maybe mid-fourth season. I don’t even remember, to be honest, because the showrunner [Nkechi Okoro Carroll] and myself are close. We’d been keeping in contact, so she had known, and we’d been talking. And we decided how to go about it, and storylines and whatnot, so it was all above board, and everyone was in the know."
All American season 5 killed Billy because the producers and Diggs came to a mutual decision that it was time for the actor to leave. The tragic turn of events wasn't prompted by a real-life death, and the person who Billy Baker in All American is based on is still very much alive.

The Real Person Who Inspired Billy Baker Explained
Carter Paysinger, The Real Billy Baker, Is Still Alive
The character of Billy Baker in All American is loosely based on Carter Paysinger, Spencer's uncle and football coach. In real life, Spencer was recruited to play football at Beverly Hills High School, just like Spencer James in the CW series in season 1. Carter was real-life Spencer's coach at the high school, and the two developed a bond that the fictional Spencer and Coach Baker mirrored in All American.
Fortunately, Carter did not die in a catastrophic bus accident as Billy did in the drama series. However, Billy's stint as the principal of South Crenshaw High School might have been inspired by Carter's promotion to principal of Beverly Hills High School. Aside from that story and the relationship between football player and coach, Carter's life has (thankfully) been very different from Billy's in All American.
Other Notable Changes All American Made To The Real Story
Spencer Paysinger's Life Was Much Less Dramatic
There were several changes made to All American compared to the real-life story of Spencer Paysinger. Some of the changes were small, such as changing character names (Spencer Paysinger became Spencer James). However, other changes were made to make the TV show a little more dramatic to add to its popularity as a Primetime series. One example of this was changing a lot about Spencer's life in football before he ever made it to the NFL.
In real life, Spencer Paysinger was recruited to play for Beverly Hills High because his family had lineage there, and his dad was even there as an assistant coach. In the TV series, Spencer has an estranged relationship with his dad that never existed. His dad also got him to transfer to a different high school, whereas he only played for Beverly Hills High in real life. He was also a much bigger star in high school on TV, playing various positions and winning All-American honors, which didn't happen in real life.
In addition to Billy Baker never dying while saving students in real life, Spencer's shooting also didn't happen in real life. This entire storyline of the shooting and how it affected his arm was all fictional and added to increase the drama of the series. His college of choice changed from Oregon to a fictional university, and he was also shown to win State Championships in high school, which never happened in real life. In the end, All American is inspired by a true story, but it is not a retelling of that story.
