One Piece Already Revealed The Truth About Shanks' Family

Summary Shanks, Luffy's mentor in One Piece, is hinted to be a Celestial Dragon through hints in Film: Red and chapter #1086.

Chapter #1086 reveals St. Figarland Garling, connected to Shanks, as the Supreme Commander of the God Knights.

Garling's judgment of Celestial Dragons shows his contrasting morals to Shanks, hinting at an intriguing family connection.

Chapter #1086 of One Piece drops a major clue about the origins of Red-Haired Shanks, Luffy's mentor and one of the Four Emperors, with a shocking introduction of the man who can judge even the Celestial Dragons, Saint Figarland Garling. If true, this would make Shanks a Celestial Dragon.

One Piece's Egghead Arc has finally revealed the actual events of the gathering of world leaders, the Reverie. While the world was told otherwise, it ended with the Five Elders and Imu killing Alabasta's King Cobra. The event also saw members of the Straw Hat Fleet protecting Fish-Man Island's princess from being captured by the Celestial Dragon, St. Charlos. However, the one good Celestial Dragon of the series, St. Don Quixote Myosgard, took responsibility for the attack.

Shockingly, chapter #1086 of One Piece shows that he was then executed by a new character, introduced as the Supreme Commander of the God Knights and former champion of God Valley, who shares a legendary family name with Shanks: St. Figarland Garling.

One Piece Introduced St. Figarland Garling, Who Is Related To Shanks

Close

Although Shanks was introduced in One Piece's first chapter, very little about his history was revealed until One Piece Film: RED was released. While the series' films are considered non-canon, some details regarding world-building and lore are snuck into the films. Film: Red contained a clue that Shanks is actually a Celestial Dragon. While assuming that Uta was Shank's biological daughter, The Five Elders feared getting involved with her because of her relation to the Figarland Family.

Of course, anyone who watched One Piece Film: RED knows that Shanks in fact adopted Uta, but what's important is that the Five Elders never learned that fact and just assumed that Uta was biologically related to Shanks. Given all these facts, it's only logical to assume that this clue confirms Shanks's connection to St. Figarland Garling. It's important to note that though RED is, indeed, non-canon, Uta's relationship to Shanks is canon to the manga and anime series. Therefore, it's not unreasonable to assume that Shanks' relation to the mysterious Figarland Family is also canon.

Film Red Revealed Shanks Figarland Family Connection

Film RED also revealed that when Shanks was a baby, he was found in a treasure chest by the former Pirate King Gol D. Roger during One Piece's infamous God Valley Incident. The most popular theory is that Shanks was in God Valley - where a group of Celestial Dragons was attacked by the Rocks Pirates - because he is the scion of one of those noble families, who ended up being raised by the Pirate King.

It remains a mystery what happened during the conflict that saw One Piece's strongest pirate crew the Rocks Pirates defeated by Luffy's Grandpa Garp and Roger. However, after the epic battle concluded, the island of God Valley mysteriously disappeared along with any record of its existence. Chapter #1086 of the One Piece manga revealed that the champion of God Valley, St. Figarland Garling, is still alive and holds a prestigious title among the World Nobles of Marijoa. He is the judge and executioner of Celestial Dragons, who claim to be the Gods that created the One Piece world.

Shanks and the Celestial Dragons Are Still Two of One Piece's Biggest Mysteries

There is still a lot to learn about the Supreme Commander of One Piece's powerful God Knights, but it's clear Garling's morals are the opposite of Shanks. Before the Kid Pirates were wiped out, it was revealed that Shanks' most significant weakness was his grand fleet, which was mainly composed of weaker pirate crews that the Red-Haired Pirates protect. Immediately after he is introduced, St. Figarland Garling proves he has an opposing mindset after sentencing Mjosgard to death and saying, "Stand up for sub-human scum, and you sink even lower!"

Moreover, the Figarland blood connection could also explain Shanks' mysterious meeting with the Five Elders. This is another incredibly intriguing mystery that fans will crave to see solved, and it's certain that Shanks' family and his origins will play a major role in this incredible final saga of One Piece.
