The Crow is returning to screens three decades after Alex Proyas’s 1994 original. After being stuck in development hell for 15 years, a release date for The Crow reboot is here and plenty has already been revealed about the cast and story of the reimagining of the 1989 graphic novel by James O’Barr. The new Crow movie will star Bill Skarsgård in the titular role, bringing the incredibly dark revenge story to life once again with a modern take on The Crow.

The 1994 The Crow movie starred Brandon Lee as Erik Draven, the undead antihero known as The Crow. Due to a tragic accident on set, Brandon Lee passed away while filming The Crow, an event that’s become synonymous with the film's legacy. However, the movie still became a cult classic in its own right, and anticipation for The Crow reboot is incredibly high, especially after it spent a decade and a half in development.

A New Clip Premieres At SDCC

With the movie's release date coming closer, the latest news reveals an exclusive clip from The Crow at San Diego Comic-Con. The blood-soaked scene was revealed to attendees and features Draven attacking a moving SUV on his quest for revenge. Highlighting the anti-hero's invincibility, Draven is shot several times before being pushed from the moving vehicle and ran over by a charging semi-truck. However, the clip ends with The Crow continuing to crawl after his enemies even after sustaining terminal wounds.

Erik Draven Returns On August 23rd

The release date for the hotly anticipated reboot of The Crow has been a long time coming, and the film wrapped principal photography in September 2022. Despite the long wait, a release date has been announced for the reboot, and The Crow is scheduled to premiere on August 23rd, 2024.

The Crow was originally scheduled for a June 2024 release.

The Crow reboot's cast is perhaps one of the most speculated-about aspects of the movie, especially with the tragic death of original Erik Draven actor Brandon Lee hanging over the legacy of the franchise. Though much is still unknown about the reboot's ensemble, celebrated character actor Bill Skarsgård will be stepping into the eponymous role, and he is best known for playing Pennywise the Clown in the recent adaptations of Stephen King's It. Musician FKA Twigs has been tapped to play Erik's fiancée Shelly Webster, and Isabella Wei will appear as Zadie.

The Crow Reboot Story

A Violent Revenge Story Unfolds Onscreen

The plot of The Crow reboot will follow the original movie and graphic novel. In The Crow, musician Erik Draven and his fiancée Shelley are attacked. Shelley is brutally sexually assaulted, and both she and Erik are killed. Erik is then resurrected by a mystical crow (with whom he shares a telepathic connection) to carry out vengeance. What follows is an incredibly dark revenge story in which the gothic antihero tracks down and kills his murderers one by one.

While The Crow reboot will reportedly deliver a modern take on the story, and is all but guaranteed to make a few changes. Though the core plot is expected to follow the 1994 movie and graphic novel, there are aspects of the 30-plus-year-old story that could use a modern refresh.

As anticipation mounts for the return of Erik Draven and his crow persona, a full-length trailer has been released, offering fans their first real look at the movie. Across its three-minute runtime, the violent and bloody trailer shows the rise and fall of the love affair between Erik and Shelly before the former embarks on his supernatural quest for revenge. The trailer promises that The Crow will be a slick and stylish reimagining of the classic '90s antihero, complete with plenty of gory violence.
