He wanted to find the next great love of his life after suddenly losing his wife Toni six years before. They'd been together for 43 years. Gerry had a group of 22 women aged 60 and older from whom to choose his potential partner.

Throughout The Golden Bachelor, it was clear that Theresa, a 70-year-old financial services professional from Shrewsbury, New Jersey, and Gerry had a very strong connection. Premiere night was Theresa's 70th birthday, and Gerry gave her a cupcake and a kiss for the occasion. He also chose her for the first one-on-one date, during which they bonded about the losses of their spouses. Theresa's husband, Billy, had passed away about nine years ago. He met her sisters, Mary and Charlotte, her daughter, Jen, her son-in-law, Matt, and three of her six grandsons. Gerry and Theresa then shared a beautiful night in the Fantasy Suite. In the end, Gerry proposed to Theresa, and she happily accepted.

Gerry & Theresa Announce Their Divorce

In an exclusive interview with Good Morning America on April 12, 2024, shared via Instagram, Gerry and Theresa held hands as they announced that they were getting divorced. Theresa prefaced the news by saying, "We have received so much love and support from so many people who watched The Golden Bachelor, and I don't think we can tell you how many people told us that it gave them so much hope. We want none of that to change for anybody."

Gerry added, "Theresa and I have had a number of heart-to-heart conversations. And we've looked closely at our situation, our living situation and so forth, and we've kind of come to the decision mutually that it's probably time for us to dissolve our marriage."

Theresa and Gerry blamed logistics for their shocking split. Gerry explained, "The thing that strikes me the most in our conversations ... It's been how dedicated both of us are to our families. So we look at these situations, and I think we just feel like it's best for the happiness of each of us to live apart." Theresa added that the plan was for them to move to South Carolina. She said, "We looked at homes in South Carolina. We considered New Jersey. And we just looked at home after home, but we never got to the point where we made that decision."

Theresa also insisted that the allegations about Gerry's past, including the report that The Golden Bachelor wasn't forthcoming about his dating history, played no role in their split. She said, "Gerry had already discussed that with me. He had explained it to me before the report was ever released. So we were good with that. That didn't play into it." In addition, Gerry and Theresa shared that they'd signed a prenuptial agreement, and they highly recommend it to others.

Gerry and Theresa emphasized that they didn't fall out of love. Gerry said, "I still love this person. There's no doubt in my mind. I still am in love with her. I root for her every day." Theresa echoed his sentiment, saying, "I still love him." The couple said that they'll stay in each other's lives, and that they're best friends.

Although they could've kept their split private for a longer period of time, Theresa and Gerry didn't want to hide their breakup. Theresa said, "We didn't want to pretend. We wouldn't lie to anyone. We can't do that." Gerry added, "70 and 72 ... pretending is kind of a waste." Theresa also said that it was "sad to say" that she'll have to give her engagement and wedding rings back to the show because she thinks "that's the rule." However, Gerry added, "But you know what? We don't have to give back the memories."

Gerry & Theresa Will Continue To Look For Love

Both Gerry and Theresa said that they'll continue to search for love. Theresa added, "And we tell everybody else to continue to look for love." It's important for them that others don't give up on finding love because they've broken up.

The Golden Bachelor's Theresa and Gerry seemed like a perfect couple. They inspired so many people to believe that love is possible at any age. However, they couldn't figure out how to blend their lives together. As an older couple, they had families, including children and grandchildren to consider as they figured out their living arrangements, and it simply didn't work out. As they begin this new chapter of their lives separately from each other, Gerry and Theresa are wished all the best.
