In 2024, Bollywood is set to unveil some of the most highly anticipated movies, poised to achieve success both commercially and artistically. In 2023, several major Bollywood releases, like Pathaan, Jawan, Gadar 2, The Kerala Story, and Animal performed well at the box office. Two of the biggest 2023 releases, Dunki and Salaar, continue to draw crowds thanks to positive word of mouth. The Indian film industry hopes to repeat this success in 2024 with an exciting slate of releases spanning different genres that promise to provide quality entertainment.

Much like the best Bollywood movies of 2023, this year has movies featuring top stars lined up that are already creating substantial buzz. 10 Emergency

Emergency is actor Kangana Ranaut's first directorial project, a political drama where she plays former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. As reported by India Today, Ranaut views the film not as a biopic, but as a showcase of a controversial period in India's democracy. Originally scheduled for a November 2023 release, Emergency has faced delays with the premiere now moved to June of 2024. It is now planned to release on the same day as Chandu Champion, another highly anticipated release for the year.

Tracing the imposition of 1975's Emergency order, the movie promises a dramatized look at a tumultuous time. With Ranaut at the helm both in front of and behind the camera, Emergency has already generated hype as one of this year's most unique Bollywood offerings. It's also the last film for Satish Kaushik, a prolific Indian performer and director who passed away in 2023.

9 Kalki 2898 AD

Set in a post-apocalyptic society, but inspired by Hindu lore, the focus of the movie is on Kalki, the final incarnation of the Hindu god Vishnu. Starring Prabhas (Salaar: Part 1 - Ceasefire) and Deepika Padukone (Fighter), the movie is not strictly a Bollywood production. Instead, it’s been filmed simultaneously in Hindi and Telugu to be released in both languages at once.

Kalki 2898 AD has been delayed multiple times. Its push from January to May, and then from May to June, means there’s a possibility for more VFX touch ups, but also that it will no longer conflict with election days in May across India. The release delay by just over a month also might work in the movie’s favor as it will be able to screen on more IMAX screens following Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes' engagement with IMAX screens for the weeks prior (via Times of India). That might allow for a bigger box office draw.

8 Chandu Champion

Following his 2023 hit Satyaprem Ki Prem Kahani, actor Kartik Aaryan joins producer Sajid Nadiadwala for the 2024 film Chandu Champion. Based on the true story of Murlikant Petkar, India's first Paralympic gold medalist, the movie spotlights the athletic triumph and resilience of this Indian Army legend. Murlikant Petkar was a finalist in three different events at the 1972 Paralympics, and set a world record in freestyle swimming at the time.

Branded with the tagline "The man who refused to surrender," Chandu Champion promises an uplifting underdog narrative. When it comes to sports movies, it's the underdog stories, especially the true ones, that tend to hit with audiences. Tracing Petkar’s journey from disability to a championship victory, the film provides Aaryan a dramatic starring vehicle while continuing Nadiadwala's reputation for delivering inspirational stories. With its combination of human interest and national pride, Chandu Champion shapes up as one of next year's most crowd-pleasing movies.

7 Stree 2

The 2018 film Stree was a surprise hit. It followed a group of men in a small town in India who discovered that the legend of the Stree might actually be true. The Stree is a woman who takes men, leaving only their clothing behind, during a specific festival. Three men and one woman team up to stop the Stree for good, and find that maybe they don’t know everything about the legend after all.

The movie was well-received because it blended comedy and horror so well, but also because the message at the heart of the film was about respecting women. The sequel is expected to be a fusion of those genres and include that concept as well, but no plot details have been revealed. It will, however, reunite all of the main cast members from the original movie.

6 Jigra

Jigra is an upcoming Hindi thriller and action film that stars and is co-produced by Alia Bhatt under her Eternal Sunshine Productions banner. Bhatt is a prolific actress in Bollywood movies, but also in Telugu-language movies like 2022's popular RRR. Backed by Karan Johar's Dharma Productions after their successful 2022 collaboration on Darlings, Jigra unites Bhatt with Johar in both acting and producing capacities.

The film's announcement video tells the story of courage requiring carelessness toward life, setting up a story centered on two siblings. The only official summary released for the movie so far details that the movie "follows an attempt to break out of prison." With Bhatt striking a grim figure in shadowy streets in the video's voiceover, this upcoming Bollywood movie will be a gritty dramatic tale that will showcase a more daring side of the acclaimed actress within a dangerous setting.

5 Metro… In Dino

Ludo Director Anurag Basu reteams with composer Pritam (who has worked on music for more than 150 projects in his career) for one of 2024’s most eagerly awaited sequels, Metro... In Dino. Metro, the film features an ensemble cast including Shilpa Shetty (Indian Police Force), Irrfan Khan (Murder at Teesri Mazil 302), Konkona Sen Sharma (Mumbai Diaries), Kay Kay Menon (The Railway Men) and Kangana Ranaut (Emergency).

Taking its name from a song in the original movie, Metro... In Dino marks Basu’s second collaboration with producer Ritesh Sidhwani after their 2020 project Ludo. It's a Bollywood movie in the vein of ensemble love stories like Love Actually. Billed as an anthology exploring human relationships in a metropolitan setting, the movie promises the director’s trademark blend of warmth and wit.

4 Singham Again

Close

Hitting theaters on Indian Independence Day, Singham Again serves as the third chapter in Bollywood's popular cop franchise. With its release coinciding with the arrival of Pushpa 2: The Rise, this sequel faces stiff competition even as it remains one of 2024's most eagerly awaited titles. Given the commercial success of the previous two Singham films in 2011 and 2014, expectations are sky-high for the next installment.

Leading man Ajay Devgn returns as the righteous titular officer along with an ensemble cast that includes Kareena Kapoor (Crew) and Ranveer Singh ('83) for another action-packed confrontation with forces of corruption. As the cornerstone of Bollywood's cop universe, Singham Again will deliver thrilling heroic spectacles befitting India's celebration of independence. For now, details of the plot are being closely guarded, leaving fans to speculate what the next story could be.

3 Badass Ravikumar

This particular upcoming Bollywood movie is actually a spinoff of The Xpose. Himesh Reshammiya returns to play Ravi Kumar, a former police officer who became an actor. In his previous movie, the actor set out to solve a murder to clear his girlfriend’s name when she was accused of murdering a rival. Badass Ravikumar promises to be just as twisty, but even more action-packed than the last.

Here, Ravi finds himself cast in action-musicals. Reality and fantasy blend together though when he has to go up against multiple villains. One of those villains is confirmed to be played by Prabhu Deva (Bagheera). No other cast has been confirmed just yet, but there’s sure to be fans who would like to see other members of The Xpose cast return. There’s also likely to be a large ensemble just like there was for The Xpose.

2 Chhaava

Not to be confused with Shivrayancha Chhava, which was released in January 2024, Chhaava is a historical drama inspired by the life of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, the son of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Specific details about what the movie will cover haven’t been released, but presumably, it will focus on his military actions and ultimate death. Still in production in 2024, no promotional images from the movie have even been released.

What is known is that the movie will feature plenty of action as Vicky Kaushal (The Great Indian Family) has been clear about filming some of the biggest action sequences of his career for the movie while he was on set in late 2023. The movie also features Rashmika Mandanna who also stars in Pushpa 2. Mandanna has become one of the most in-demand stars in India because she works on films in four different Indian languages - Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, and Kannada.

1 Welcome To The Jungle

This action-comedy directed by Ahmed Khan is the third chapter in the Welcome franchise, but a standalone movie, so viewers don’t feel like they have to see the first two in order to watch this one. Akshay Kumar, who starred in the first but not the second movie, returns for this installment as part of a huge ensemble. The movie will follow two police officers tasked with tracking down a notorious criminal. To their surprise, one of them has a big connection to the very criminal they’re looking for.

Though the movie has been in development since 2022, the full cast wasn’t assembled until late 2023, when images and a motion poster were released to pique the public interest. That was all long before the movie even started filming in December of 2023 for a release one year later.
