Summary 2024 is already a strong year for action games, with major titles like Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth and Dragon's Dogma 2 having kicked off the early part of the year.

Many of the upcoming action games have unspecified release dates, but will be nailed down as the year continues.

The second and third quarters of 2024 will see the release of highly anticipated games like Hades 2 and Black Myth: Wukong.

2024 is already proving to be a good year for fans of the action game genre, with big titles such as Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth and Dragon's Dogma 2 having kicked off the early months. With a genre that is as broad as "action," there are many games to fill out the list that incorporate themes from other categories of games as well. Many sequels and original releases fill the calendar for 2024, ranging from those that are purely focused on combat to those that take a much broader approach and combine gameplay from other genres.

While many of this year's (and next year's) upcoming games have already been announced, including several of 2024's most anticipated action games, many of them haven't received specific release dates yet. Additionally, it's likely that some games might be announced and released within the year as well, as was seen in 2023 with the surprise release of Hi-Fi Rush near the end of January. Already there are many confirmed games filling in each quarter of 2024, and this list will continue to be periodically updated to reflect changes.

The first quarter of 2024 saw an exciting array of hugely popular RPGs, including highly anticipated RPGs like Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth and Dragon's Dogma 2. Other notable highlights include Rise of the Ronin from Team Ninja (Nioh, Wo Long), Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown, and Granblue Fantasy Relink. Notably, however, while S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl had previously been announced for early 2024, the game has now been delayed to September 2024.

The second quarter of 2024 looks to continue the action-filled video game trend with several large launches as the weather turns warmer. Especially notable are Tales of Kenzera: ZAU, an action-heavy metroidvania previously announced at the 2023 Game Awards, and the PS5 exclusive sci-fi action game, Stellar Blade, which has had many excitedly anticipating it for quite some time. Another notable inclusion is the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC to Elden Ring, releasing in late June 2024.

Moving into the second half of the year, there are unfortunately fewer games with announced release dates yet, but as the year moves forward, many more will be added to this time frame. Among these confirmed games includes Black Myth: Wukong, which is based on Chinese mythology and promises to be an impressive and detailed title. Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 is another to watch, and is a sequel to a well-regarded third-person shooter of the same name released in 2011.

So far, looking at the end of 2024 into the holiday season appears pretty bare for the action video game genre. Naturally, many developers who have not yet announced their launch dates will be shooting or this time frame to benefit from the holiday sales, and so the list will grow. In the meantime, there is currently only one title that is confirmed to be releasing between October 1 to December 31, Terminator: Survivors, which will be entering its early access period.

Notable action games with no specified release date include Earthblade, an "explor-action platformer" from Extremely OK Games (Celeste), the Early Access Launch Hyper Light Breaker, a 3D action roguelike from Heart Machine (Hyper Light Drifter, Solar Ash), Star Wars Outlaws, an open-world Ubisoft game set in the Star Wars universe, and Zenless Zone Zero, the newest action game from HoYoverse (Genshin Impact, Honkai: Star Rail).
