Not long after it was announced that Stuart Martin would not return as "The Duke", the latest news sees Miss Scarlet season 5 add a new cast member to star alongside Kate Phillips in the eponymous role (via PBS). Tom Durant Pritchard (The Crown) has been cast as Alexander Blake, a rugged ex-soldier brought in by Scotland Yard to replace the departing "Duke". The Detective doesn't see anything wrong with a female crime solver, but he does take umbrage with private detectives getting involved in his cases.

The official announcement for Miss Scarlet season 5 came in March 2024, just a short while after the end of the fourth season. The fate of the series was in little jeopardy, but the renewal also came with major shakeups in the cast and even a shortening of the show's title. No longer known as Miss Scarlet and The Duke, the series will march on by a much shorter title, Miss Scarlet.

What Might Happen After William's Departure?

It is unclear exactly what will happen in Miss Scarlet and The Duke season 5, and the closing moments of season 4 didn't offer much in the way of clues. Season 4 saw the duo split up as Eliza accepts a job offer at Nash & Sons, but William eventually professes his love for Eliza. William was then absent from the final two episodes, and their love story was put on the backburner as she solved a case involving Nash.

Unfortunately, Stuart Martin's departure from the series is seemingly going to rob fans of any chance for closure regarding the William and Eliza love plot, which leaves season 5 somewhat open-ended. However, the introduction of Tom Durant Pritchard's Alexander Blake will certainly shake things up, and the hardened detective is likely going to butt heads with the strong-willed Eliza.
