Batman: Caped Crusader's Penguin Gets The Classic Comic Treatment In Spot-On DC Art

New fan art shows Batman: Caped Crusader's Oswalda Cobblepot in a style reminiscent of classic Batman comics. This iteration of the Penguin is unusual in that she's female. Otherwise, she and her comic counterpart have a lot in common both aesthetically and personality-wise. They are both business people on the surface but crime bosses underneath. Though Oswalda's version of the Iceberg Lounge is a missile-launching yacht, and she is a singer, so she might be just a bit cooler. Voiced by Minnie Driver, this version of the Penguin first appeared in the Batman: Caped Crusader episode, "In Treacherous Waters."

In a TikTok video, artist ritzy_biscuit digitally draws a pop art character portrait of Oswalda. The speed-drawing features Ella Fitzgerald singing "Bill Bailey Won't You Please Come Home," the same song Oswalda sings during her introductory scene. The combination of the classic art style and jazz music evokes the Penguin of old, even if the image depicts the reimagined Oswalda.

Though she is female, Oswalda still feels very much like the Penguin audiences know and somewhat tolerate. She has the villain's iconic pointed nose and bigger build. The most significant aesthetic differences all correspond with gender and its associated differences in style.

While the art only highlights design similarities between the two, the visual association of Oswalda's Penguin with the comic book style emphasizes just how much she aligns with Oswald's previous depictions.
