Does Zelda: Echoes Of Wisdom's White Horse Have A Name?

Does Zelda: Echoes Of Wisdom's White Horse Have A Name?

The white horse which appears in The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom is a familiar sight for many long-time fans, but despite its recurring appearances it's less clear if Zelda’s horse has its own official name. Link’s own horse Epona has long since become an iconic part of the franchise, appearing in many games as the hero’s steed of choice. In comparison, Zelda’s horse is somewhat less recognizable, although recent games are undoubtedly changing this.

While the appearance of Zelda’s blonde-maned white horse is already recognizable to many from Breath of the Wild, BOTW is not the first game to feature such a horse. In actuality, just as Epona originated in Ocarina of Time, so too did Zelda’s white horse; the young princess and Impa can be seen riding one to escape Ganondorf as he makes his move to take over Hyrule. This horse likely inspired the one that Zelda is depicted riding in BOTW’s memories, and by extension her horse in Echoes of Wisdom as well.

The White Horse In Echoes Of Wisdom Has No Name

Unlike Epona, Zelda's Horse Is Nameless In-Game

Despite her long association with unmistakably similar steeds, the games never give Zelda’s horse an official name. The White Horse that Impa gifts to Zelda in Echoes of Wisdom goes unnamed, and there is no mention of the similar horse in BOTW’s memories having a name either. It is also interesting to note that EoW’s horse is a mare, while BOTW and TOTK’s unique tameable white horse is referred to as a stallion; a change very unlike the always-female Epona, although by itself this inconsistency can be dismissed by the latter explicitly being a descendant of Zelda’s own steed.

It's not clear why the games haven't canonically given Zelda's horse a name, however, it's perhaps simply due to the storytelling. It makes sense that players learn Epona's name as she belongs to the playable character, but since Zelda hasn't starred in her own game until Echoes of Wisdom, it may have been challenging to insert a name for her steed in scenarios from other games. Still, that doesn't explain why Echoes of Wisdom didn't offer a moniker for the horse.

An Old Zelda Comic May Hold The Answer To The White Horse's Name

Other Zelda Media May Have The Answer

Despite all this, however, it is still possible to find an official name for Zelda’s horse by looking beyond the games. In 1990, eight years prior to Ocarina of Time, Princess Zelda was depicted as having a white horse in the very first issue a run of comic books produced by Valiant Comics, which were simply titled The Legend of Zelda. The name of Zelda’s horse in these comics was Storm, a name which seems equally as applicable today as it did in the 90’s.

Of course, it should be noted that these old comics are certainly non-canonical to the main games of the Zelda franchise. But on the other hand, the undeniable similarities in design, combined with a lack of any other alternative, still make Storm a very reasonable name for Zelda’s white horse in the games. The name is even notably gender-neutral, making it irrelevant whether Zelda’s horse a century before BOTW’s events was a mare or a stallion like its identical descendant.

Although Storm being a name for the White Horse is quite an obscure fact, it is still an intriguing piece of trivia that has a remarkable level of relevance today. Without in-game confirmation of a name, it only makes sense to broaden one’s view of the franchise in search of one. As a result, although The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom continues a trend of the game’s not officially naming Zelda’s horse, the idea of her horse being named Storm is a very appealing concept, and for many people its little-known roots will likely only add to the appeal.
