Danny Trejo Addresses Potential Machete 3 Return At 80 Years Old

Danny Trejo discusses the likelihood of him returning for Machete 3. Machete is a 2010 movie co-directed by Ethan Maniquis and Robert Rodriguez, which features Trejo as the titular Machete who launches revenge against his former boss after being betrayed. In addition to Trejo, Machete features a leading cast including Michelle Rodriguez, Robert De Niro, Jessica Alba, Cheech Marin, Steven Seagal, and Jeff Fahey. The 2010 film was followed up by a sequel three years later, titled Machete Kills.

In an interview with Moviefone, Trejo discusses whether he would return for Machete 3. First, Trejo was asked about the status of Machete 3, which is reportedly going to be called Machete Kills Again...in Space. Trejo did not provide a detailed status update, but noted that "the whole country's waiting for it." When asked more specifically if he would return for Machete 3, Trejo said "Oh yeah[...] I love that movie." He also noted that he is "still in great shape" for the film. At this point, it has been over a decade since Machete Kills was released in 2013. This long gap between films would seemingly indicate that Machete Kill's once-sequel, Machete in Space, is a rumor of the past. After all, since Machete Kills Again in Space was initially teased in a fake trailer in 2013, news on its progress has been slow. In 2018, Trejo noted that Rodriguez has "his own timetable for doing stuff," neglecting to provide a concrete production update. Last year, Rodriguez noted that they "have to do" Machete 3 to satisfy fans.

Still, there have not been any concrete updates on any actual production for Machete Kills Again in Space. However, the fact that Trejo is even willing to still do the film is a good sign that it could happen. Though Machete Kills Again in Space could try to pass the torch to a different, younger version of the lead, it is hard to imagine a Machete movie without Trejo, even if he is now 80. If the octogenarian is still willing, maybe this and the fan's fervor will push it forward.

Looking at Rodriguez's directing career, I can imagine that one barrier to prioritizing making Machete Kills Again in Space is the sheer ludicrousness of the plot. As mentioned, the concept was originally posed as a fake trailer after Machete Kills. As evidenced by the 2023 Rodriguez quote, however, fans have demanded for Machete Kills Again in Space to be made in full. If these fans can rally behind the goofy film being made, perhaps they can also propel the action movie to do well if it is released.
