"I'm Dressed to Kill": Moon Knight's New Era Explains Why He's Marvel's 1 Truly Unbeatable Hero

Warning: Contains SPOILERS for Moon Knight: Fist of Khonshu #1! Moon Knight is making his violent return to Marvel Comics in the first issue of his upcoming series that will act as an all-new era for the brutal antihero - and it’s literally not pulling any punches. Not only is his upcoming comic making it clear that Moon Knight is truly unstoppable, it’s also reframing his past defeats as nothing more than calculated maneuvers to accomplish a larger goal. In other words, this is perhaps the deadliest Moon Knight has ever been depicted - indeed, he is “dressed to kill”.

In a preview shared by Comicbook.com for Moon Knight: Fist of Khonshu #1 by Jed MacKay and Alessandro Cappuccio, Moon Knight strolls into a seedy nightclub looking for a couple of targets who are about to face his wrath. He does so as his alter ego Mr. Knight, seemingly in accordance with the club’s strict dress code (as he cheekily makes note of in the preview).

Meanwhile, two people are sitting in a diner, talking about Moon Knight’s return. One is a police officer named Frazier, the other a former cop named Flint. Flint quit the force after working alongside Moon Knight, as he saw first-hand the horrific nature of his brand of vigilante justice. Flint is trying to tell Frazier to leave Moon Knight alone, saying that the antihero is utterly unstoppable, comparing him to a deadly hurricane.

What Happened to Moon Knight to Lead to His Violent Return?

Moon Knight Sacrificed Himself in Moon Knight Vol. 9 #30

Moon Knight: Fist of Khonshu marks the antihero’s violent return to the Marvel Universe - but, where did he go? In Moon Knight Vol. 9 #30, Marc Spector and his team (the Midnight Mission) were working to defeat a villain called the Black Spectre, who had a resonator device with the power to drive the citizens of New York City mad, and eventually kill them. After the Black Spectre fatally shot Moon Knight, the antihero gathered all the strength within himself to detonate the resonator, sacrificing himself in the process.

That moment marked the end of Moon Knight’s most recent series, and he wouldn’t return from the grave until Blood Hunt #4, when Khonshu decided to resurrect his ideal avatar to battle a horde of vampires alongside the Avengers. Now that the vampires are defeated, and the world is back to its version of ‘normal’, Moon Knight has resumed his mission of defending the travelers of the night. And, based on what this preview shows, he’s back with a vengeance.

Moon Knight’s New Era Redefines His Previous ‘Defeats’

Not only does this preview make note of the fact that Moon Knight’s death was decidedly less than permanent (meaning that previous ‘defeat’ became a full-on victory), but it also reframes another ‘defeat’. In Devil’s Reign, when the Kingpin (as Mayor Fisk) made it illegal to be a superhero/vigilante in New York City, Moon Knight was defeated by the Thunderbolts and sent to prison. However, as Flint clarifies, Moon Knight wanted to get captured. One of his targets was locked up in prison, and the only way to get to him was to be sent there himself.

Kingpin merely gave Moon Knight the perfect opportunity to get arrested without doing anything wrong in Devil’s Reign, effectively playing right into Moon Knight’s hands and unwittingly assisting in his mission. Indeed, Moon Knight doesn’t lose, and his return proves that he really can’t be killed. Now, Moon Knight is going into his new era not only “dressed to kill”, but as a truly unbeatable hero.
