The legendary procedural NCIS has been a television staple for more than 20 seasons thus far, but will the flagship series be renewed for season 23? Debuting in 2003 (as a spinoff of JAG), NCIS follows the special agents of the U.S. Navy's Naval Crime Investigative Service, as they are faced with the most compelling cases that the military can throw at them. Anchored for most of its run by Mark Harmon as Supervisory Special Agent Jethro Gibbs (played by Mark Harmon), the series has followed in the footsteps of other long-running procedurals by showcasing an ability to change.

Though NCIS itself was a spinoff, the flagship show has launched a host of off-shoots to varying degrees of success. The 2020s has been a time of great upheaval for the franchise, as some shows have gotten the ax in shocking fashion (see NCIS: Hawaii) while CBS has also green-lit more spinoffs. Shows like NCIS: Origins aim to transform the long-running franchise, but NCIS is still going strong all these years later. Though CBS has yet to renew NCIS for a 23rd season, it seems like a foregone conclusion that the network will order more episodes.

If and when NCIS does eventually conclude, there will be plenty of news regarding its last outing

Though NCIS is still one of the most popular network shows on TV today, CBS has yet to order season 23. This move isn't astounding since season 22 is still so new, and it shouldn't be a cause for alarm. With the franchise going through an expansion period in the early years of the 2020s, some shows have come while others have gone in shocking fashion. Throughout all of that, NCIS has stayed steady, and is expected to remain consistent throughout season 22. Furthermore, a recognizable show like the flagship series is needed to anchor all the upcoming spinoffs.

With all that said, it's only a matter of time before CBS picks up NCIS for more episodes, and a cancelation would certainly not be made without a lot of fanfare. 22 seasons (so far) on the air puts NCIS in the upper echelon of longest-running scripted shows of all time, and CBS wouldn't put it out to pasture without making a big deal of its final season. If and when NCIS does eventually conclude, there will be plenty of news regarding its last outing. CBS renewed NCIS season 22 in April 2024, but it likely won't take that long for an answer regarding season 23.

NCIS season 21 did not air during fall 2023 due to the 2023 Hollywood strikes, and instead returned at mid-season in early 2024.

Expect The Team To Return For Season 23

There have been a host of changes across the show's 22 years on the air thus far, but the cast of NCIS season 23 is expected to remain the same. Since nothing is known about the potential upcoming season, and season 22 being unfinished, there's no way to predict if any of the NCIS agents will depart. Thus, it's expected that Gary Cole will be back as Supervisory Special Agent Alden Parker, alongside his second-in-command, Timothy McGee (played by Sean Murray). It's unknown if Katrina Law will depart as Jessica Knight, so she's expected to return until more is revealed.

What's Next For The NCIS Team?

Predicting the plot of NCIS season 23 is difficult, since the show is a classic police procedural and doesn't feature a very strong overarching narrative. Typically, each episode of the series is a standalone case, though some storylines have carried over across individual seasons and multiple seasons as well. Until season 22 is completed, it will be difficult to know what's in store for the next, so expect the usual procedural process from week to week.

A few storylines might keep going into NCIS season 23, especially Jessica Knight as she adjusts to her new job. Though she may eventually leave the NCIS fold for good, it's clear that Knight isn't happy with her station in life, and she misses her old team. This could cause more drama going forward, and could see her quit in favor of returning to her old position. Regardless, season 23 will deliver more classic procedural action.
