Rick and Morty vs. Superman Is the Last Official Crossover I Expected to See in 2024

Warning! Spoilers ahead for Multiversus: Collision Detected #2!I've seen Superman go up against a lot of strange foes in the past, but I didn't count on ever seeing him take on Rick and Morty! Numerous Warner Bros franchises are colliding thanks to a tie-in comic for the fighting game Multiversus, and that includes the protagonists of the incredibly popular animated series.

Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman are used to discovering new worlds, but after shared hallucinations brought them to Mister Miracle and Big Barda's doorstep, they discovered beloved cartoon character Bugs Bunny. But Bugs' arrival in the DC Universe pales in comparison to the unexpected debut of mad scientist Rick Sanchez.

Multiversus: Collision Detected #2 by Bryan Q. Miller and Jon Sommariva

Close

In Multiversus: Collision Detected #2 by Bryan Q. Miller, Jon Sommariva, Matt Herms, and Marshall Dillon, Batman interrogates Bugs Bunny, curious about how the unusual rabbit made it to the DC Universe. Meanwhile, Superman talks with Avia, Barda and Miracle's daughter, who reveals that she fashioned a 'Daughter Box' out of New Genesis tech to peer beyond the Source Wall. Unfortunately, when investigating the Daughter Box, a giant beam emerges from it, bringing forth a number of other accidental guests into the DC Universe.

Avia was Mister Miracle and Big Barda's daughter in Kingdom Come (1996)!

The Justice League begins checking out various impact zones caused by the Daughter Box only to discover several surprising faces. In Central City, the Flash finds Scooby-Doo and Shaggy at Big Belly Burger as they prepare to munch down a mountain of burgers. In Gorilla City, Wonder Woman faces off against the Wicked Witch, who has converted several apes into her flying flunkies. And in Metropolis, Superman observes as Steven Universe and Garnet of the Crystal Gems take on Livewire and Parasite in a fight.

...the Dark Knight is swarmed by tentacles operated by an unknown and belching figure.

In the Batcave, Batman learns of a way that the heroes may be able to send these new arrivals back to their original homes. However, the Dark Knight is swarmed by tentacles operated by an unknown and belching figure. Back in Metropolis, Superman hears something strange and ceases the fight by encasing Parasite and Livewire in ice. Superman brings Steven and Garnet's attention to a threat from the skies, though Clark notes it's not who he was expecting. Brainiac’s ship descends from the clouds, but it’s been overhauled to resemble Rick Sanchez’s head as Rick greets everyone with a “Wubba-lubba-dub-dub”.

I Can Only Imagine How Rick Vs. Superman is Going to End Up

Boundless Optimism vs. Drunken Nihilism

I haven't played Multiversus, but I am a big fan of many of the properties involved in it. When I heard there was going to be a comic tie-in, I thought it'd be a cool way of bringing certain characters together (namely Steven Universe and Superman, a dream team in my book). But I didn't anticipate Rick emerging as a potential antagonist, though I suppose in hindsight it's pretty obvious that he would. I'm not a Rick and Morty fan, but I've seen enough of the show to know that out of everyone featured in Multiversus, he's Superman's opposite.

Who better to challenge a bitter nihilist like Rick than someone who embodies concepts like hope and idealism like Superman?

2024 is a year that had Superman go through one crazy crossover in Justice League vs. Godzilla vs. Kong and while Godzilla nearly killed the Man of Steel in that one, it never felt like Clark was ever really in trouble. Rick on the other hand? The guy's a downright psycho. Now don't get me wrong, I know Mutiversus: Collision Detected isn't going to go to the same depths as a regular episode of Rick and Morty, but still, it's pretty bold to have a character as noble as Superman go up against a man who canonically destroyed several micro-universes.

Related I Can't Believe Warner Bros. Just Let Bugs Bunny Make This Incredibly Inappropriate Joke Warner Bros. surprisingly lets Bugs Bunny make a risque joke, when reminded me as a fan how Looney Tunes has always been kind of edgy.

At the same time though, I feel like it makes sense to pit these two together. Who better to challenge a bitter nihilist like Rick than someone who embodies concepts like hope and idealism like Superman? Granted, I don't expect whatever's next for these two to be the end-all, be-all treatise on good and evil, but it should be pretty interesting. Despite their wildly different views on life, Superman and Rick Sanchez have their respective fan bases, and I think it'll be quite interesting to see how they interact in a non-quite-canonical confrontation.

Can Superman and Rick See Eye-to-Eye?

Superman Has Gotten Through to Worse

Thankfully, this isn't the first mad scientist with a body count that Superman has ever had to take on. But the Man of Steel has a way with words and if history tells us anything, it's that Clark can always find common ground. Do I think him and Rick are going to be best buddies? Absolutely not. But I do think it'll make for a good laugh to at least see Superman flummoxed by one of the most despicable characters in Rick and Morty.

Multiversus: Collision Detected #2 is available now from DC Comics.
