Sith Heretic Darth Momin Is Returning to Star Wars (Darth Vader's Secret Mentor Is Back)
Marvel Comics is celebrating ten years of Star Wars comics with the one-shot A New Legacy issue – which includes a story featuring the return of Darth Momin, Darth Vader's heretical mentor of sorts. Excitingly, each story in the issue will spotlight Star Wars characters who have debuted in the comics over the past decade.
According to Marvel's announcement, Star Wars: A New Legacy #1 features stories by Jason Aaron, Kieron Gillen, and Charles Soule, along with art by Salva Espin, Leonard Kirk, and Ramon Rosanas. One of those stories is set to include Darth Momin, who has had an incredible impact on Star Wars lore in the Marvel era.
Charles Soule's story in A New Legacy may introduce a new artifact created by Momin, adding to his devastating legacy in the Star Wars universe.
Marvel's Upcoming Star Wars Anthology One-Shot Will Add To The Legacy Of Sith Inventor Darth Momin

The Aldaraanian setting of Charles Soule's story in Star Wars: A New Legacy #1 makes it clear it is set before the events of the original Star Wars film. In the story, a gathering on the planet in honor of the Emperor – with attendees including the planet's future destroyers, Darth Vader and Grand Moff Tarkin – is also the setting of a heist plot, featuring Doctor Aphra. A Sith artifact is teased as playing a role in the tale, and one of the characters namedropped as appearing in the story is Darth Momin.

Darth Momin is most infamous in Star Wars canon as the inventor of the Fermata Cage, a prison capable of freezing an individual or place in time, then releasing them as if no time had passed. His next was a Dark Side-infused weapon with enough power to obliterate an entire city; the city would be frozen in time moments before their destruction, capturing their expressions of fear forever. Before he could complete his plan, was stopped by the Jedi, causing him to lose control over his superweapon, destroying himself in the process, leaving only his mask containing his spirit behind.
Darth Momin Taught Vader A Vital Lesson, Shaping The Trajectory Of The Original Trilogy

Darth Momin's mask was gifted to Darth Vader by Emperor Palpatine. Vader realized the spirit of Momin could possess anyone that wore his mask, and Momin worked through him to design Fortress Vader. The fortress was designed to open a door through time with the Dark Side, so Vader could resurrect his late wife Padmé Amidala. Though the function of the fortress was true, Momin manipulated Vader and used the door to reclaim his body from the past. Vader ended up defeating Momin and reached through the door himself, finding Padmé, but she denied coming back with him.
If the Sith artifact Doctor Aphra and Sana Starros are about to encounter is truly designed and sculpted by Momin himself, they are in for a difficult challenge in the upcoming Star Wars: A New Legacy.
In this sense, Darth Momin taught Darth Vader an invaluable lesson, inadvertently becoming one of his mentors, as revealed by Marvel's Star Wars comics. Though he failed time after time again, thwarted by the Jedi and then Darth Vader, Darth Momin's "works of art" always completed their intended tasks, and he always came just into reach of victory. The Sith heretic's inventions obviously have a common theme of time manipulation, and if the Sith artifact Doctor Aphra and Sana Starros are about to encounter is truly designed and sculpted by Momin himself, they are in for a difficult challenge in the upcoming Star Wars: A New Legacy anthology.
Star Wars: A New Legacy #1 will be available January 29, 2025 from Marvel Comics.
