is one of the most timeless comic strips in existence, with comics that were published in the ‘90s just as relevant and hilarious today as they were then - and that’s deliberate. Jim Davis, the creator of Garfield, consciously kept the comic strip away from certain topics, such as political or social commentary. He wanted Garfield to joke about things that people can always relate to, like eating, sleeping, and giving into their personal vices.
It is this ‘standing order’ that has made Garfield such a timeless classic, and that’s great news for fans who want to take a look back at some of the older comic strips. Readers won’t be bombarded with timely references to the specific era in which a certain crop of strips were published, they’ll simply get comics featuring the lazy, orange cat being his usual hilarious self. And, like with every Garfield comic strip, that is true for this entire month’s worth that just turned 30. Here are the 10 funniest Garfield comics published in November 1994!
10 Garfield Admits the Kitchen Means the World to Him (in the Funniest Way)
Garfield - November 7, 1994
Garfield walks up to Jon looking as chipper as fans have ever seen him, shouting about how he's back from his "world travels". Jon dryly points out that Garfield didn't just get back from traveling the world, the lazy cat didn't even leave the house. Garfield merely walked into the room Jon was in from the kitchen. However, Garfield has a clever response to Jon's fact-checking, as he says, "It's the world to me".
If there's one thing Garfield loves more than anything, it's food, so the fact that the kitchen means the world to him makes total sense.
Garfield found the funniest way to tell Jon that the kitchen means the world to him, and while his method of passing along that information was definitely weird, it certainly tracks. If there's one thing Garfield loves more than anything, it's food, so the fact that the kitchen means the world to him makes total sense.
9 “Comedy” or “Drama”, Garfield Just Loves Hitting Jon in the Face with a Pie
Garfield - November 8, 1994
Garfield runs over to Jon with a pie in his hand, saying loudly that he loves "comedy", with the clear implication being that he's going to throw the pie in Jon's face. Before he does so, however, Jon tells Garfield that people getting hit in the face with pies isn't funny - but that doesn't save him. Garfield throws the pie in Jon's face anyway, and since Jon had already told him that it isn't considered "comedy", Garfield walks away saying, "I love drama".

Garfield doesn't care if Jon considers a pie to the face "comedy" or "drama", he just wanted to throw a pie in his face. Jon can call it what he wants, but at the end of the day, he was getting a pie thrown in his face, and Garfield was going to be there to enjoy it regardless of the action's designated genre.
8 Garfield is Not Susceptible to Odie’s Contagious Optimism
Garfield - November 9, 1994
Garfield is lying on the ground, clearly having an off-day and wishing to be alone. However, that doesn't register with Odie, who practically skips over to Garfield, radiating energy and optimism. As Odie is right in front of him, Garfield says, "It's impossible not to be cheerful when Odie's around. So I'll leave", and Garfield gets up and walks away.
Garfield acknowledges that Odie's optimism is contagious, but since he wasn't in the mood to 'catch' it, Garfield made himself immune to that optimism by removing himself from Odie's presence. And, honestly, Odie is probably better off, because even if Garfield stayed, it's unlikely he would have felt better, and he definitely would have taken it out on Odie in the form of a mean (though assuredly hilarious) prank.
7 Garfield Doesn’t Even Wait Until His Food is Served Before He Starts Eating
Garfield - November 10, 1994
When it's time for Garfield's dinner, Jon opens up a can of cat food with the intention of serving it to Garfield in a bowl. But, when Jon goes to pour the cat food into the bowl, all he finds is Garfield's open mouth ready to gobble up all the cat food in one giant chomp before it even touches the bowl.
Garfield doesn't even wait until his food is served before he tries to start eating it, which is pretty indicative of his whole relationship with food. If there's food around - even if it's not meant for him - Garfield will try to eat it, and he'll do so as quickly as humanly possible. Indeed, Garfield has no need for his food bowl, he's proven that it'll just slow him down.
6 Garfield & Odie Literally Drive Jon Insane
Garfield - November 13, 1994
Jon is sitting at the dinner table, trying to enjoy his meal, when he's suddenly accosted by his pets. Both Garfield and Odie are sitting on either side of Jon, begging for a bite of his dinner. When Jon doesn't cave, the two animals resort to trickery through teamwork.
Odie laps up some of Jon's water while Garfield reaches for the steak. Jon tries to scold each of them individually, but eventually, the two completely overwhelm him.
Jon goes crazy, scarfing down his food as fast as he can, and practically starts foaming at the mouth. He goes so crazy, in fact, that both Odie and Garfield are totally freaked out by him when it's all over. While his method seemed to be madness, at least Jon was able to finish his dinner.
5 Garfield Gets Really Weird When He’s Bored
Garfield - November 15, 1994
Garfield is sitting in the house all alone, doing nothing but thinking about how bored he is. At least, almost nothing, as Garfield raises one of his legs to reveal that his foot is wearing an old birthday party hat. Garfield dryly says, "My foot is having a good time", though there doesn't seem to be an ounce of joy within him when he says it, not even in his foot. But, whether it's working or not, Garfield is at least trying to cure his boredom. The only problem is, it's just weird.
What are readers even looking at here? Garfield dressed up his foot in a birthday party hat and assigned it its own cheerful identity. What? It's decidedly strange, to be sure, and proves that Garfield apparently just gets weird when he's bored.
4 Garfield & Jon Enjoy Some Interesting Friday Nights
Garfield - November 18, 1994
This Garfield strip begins with the titular cat and Jon throwing something at an unseen target, with Garfield seemingly enjoying himself on this Friday night (though he's careful not to show it). It's then revealed that Jon and Garfield are playing some odd variation of darts, but instead of throwing darts at the target, they're throwing sardines - and Jon is quite good at it.
They're playing a game together on a Friday night, and while Garfield is trying to make it seem like he doesn't care, he's playing the weird darts game right along with Jon, and it's fair to say this particular Friday night meant more to him than he'd let on.
This comic is actually very sweet, as it's a bit different from normal Garfield strips. Usually, Jon and Garfield are playfully at odds, with one of them driving the other crazy. But here, they're playing a game together on a Friday night, and while Garfield is trying to make it seem like he doesn't care, he's playing the weird darts game right along with Jon, and it's fair to say this particular Friday night meant more to him than he'd let on.
3 Garfield Gets Outsmarted by a Clever Mouse
Garfield - November 20, 1994
Garfield makes it his mission to kill the mouse that's living in Jon's house. To do this, Garfield gets a wind-up toy that looks like a piece of cheese and has it wheel across the floor next to the mouse's hole. However, rather than a mouse coming for it, a wind-up toy mouse chases the wind-up toy cheese, as if the real mouse inside the hole was matching Garfield's insulting trick with a trick of its own.
What's interesting about this comic is that fans might actually know who this mouse is. Ten years earlier, Garfield befriended a mouse named Squeak (Garfield actually named him), and Garfield even worked to keep Squeak safe in Jon's house. Could this be the same mouse? And if so, why does Garfield want to kill him now? Either way, this mystery mouse got the better of Garfield.
2 Garfield Receives a Hilariously Perfect Dose of Karmic Justice
Garfield - November 24, 1994
Jon is proudly researching information about the new fish he bought, clearly excited about the new pet that's been added to the house. One fun fact he learned is that his fish can expand to fifty times its original size when it feels threatened, and Jon tells this to Garfield. While Jon may have assumed Garfield was quietly listening to him reading aloud while sitting nicely with the new fish, Garfield was actually in the middle of experiencing the 'fun fact' Jon had just read for himself.
Garfield ate the exotic fish, and after he swallowed it, the fish did what Jon said it could do and expanded to fifty times its size inside Garfield's stomach. It was rotten of Garfield to eat Jon's new fish, but he certainly paid for it with a sweet dose of karmic justice.
1 Garfield & Odie are the Perfect Partners in Crime
Garfield - November 27, 1994
As Jon is trying to enjoy his hamburger, he notices Garfield's tail slowly getting closer to him. Knowing that his food-motivated cat will stop at nothing to eat his lunch if given the chance, Jon moves the burger to the other side of the table, not taking his eyes off of Garfield's tail all the while. Somehow, Garfield himself pops up where Jon's hamburger was moved to, and he steals the burger before Jon even knows what's happening. Come to find out, 'Garfield's tail' was actually Odie all along wearing a fake tail on his head, as he was helping Garfield steal Jon's lunch.
Garfield may claim to dislike Odie, but this comic strip alone not only proves that the two of them make a great team, but that Odie loves Garfield no matter what, and will always have his back - even if that means teaming up with him against Jon. Plus, this comic strip is simply hilarious, making it one of the 10 funniest Garfield comics that just turned 30.
