Skeleton Crew Drops Major 1970s Star Wars Lore Connections: Here's 22 Easter Eggs We Spotted
This article covers a developing story. Continue to check back with us as we will be adding more information as it becomes available.
Skeleton Crew episode 3 features a literal treasure trove of Easter eggs. Starring Jude Law as Jod Na Nawood and a crew of kids lost in the Star Wars galaxy, episode 3 sees the new crew of The Onyx Cinder officially coming together for the first time. Evading pirates and seeking answers about the lost world of At Attin, this new episode features some great references, including some major connections to Legends and the 1970s.
In Skeleton Crew episode 3, Jod Na Nawood partners with Wim, Fern, Neel, and KB to escape Port Borgo and find the kids' lost homeworld. Needing a way off Borgo while also seeking the legendary lost treasure of At Attin, Jod is more than willing to let the kids think he's a Jedi before his true intentions are eventually revealed. Keeping that in mind, here are 22 of the biggest Easter eggs and references to be found in Skeleton Crew episode 3.
22 Jude Law Is CRIMSON JACK
A Major New Alias Connecting To Star Wars Legends
Close
Beyond the names Captain Silvo and Jod Na Nawood, it's also revealed that Jude Law's Star Wars character is also known as "Crimson Jack". Crimson Jack comes from Legends, specifically 1977's original Star Wars comics from Marvel. In these stories, Crimson Jack was a key rival of Han Solo's, having robbed Han and Chewis of their reward from the Rebel Alliance following A New Hope which they had hoped to use to pay off Jabba the Hutt. However, Han Solo ultimately proved the better scoundrel and defeated Crimson Jack.
In the established canon, there was an issue of Halcyon Legacy where the titular luxury cruiser was ambushed by a pirate named Crimson Jack and his crew. However, this was much closer to the events of the sequel trilogy compared to Skeleton Crew. As such, it feels quite likely that the comics' Crimson Jack and Jude Law's preceding Jack are two separate characters in the Star Wars timeline (perhaps being an inherited name such as The Princess Bride's "Dread Pirate Roberts").
21 Jod Uses The Force In A Callback To Obi-Wan Kenobi
Just Like On The Death Star
Escaping the brig with the kids, Jod seemingly uses the Force to distract two pirates. This is not unlike when Obi-Wan Kenobi uses the Force to distract and evade stormtroopers on the Death Star in A New Hope.
20 You Can Spot Hondo Ohnaka's Ship At Port Borgo
The Katooni
As seen in the first two episodes of Skeleton Crew and in this new episode, the ship of the infamous pirate captain Hondo Ohnaka can be seen right in the center. Named The Katooni, it looks as though the ship was part of the chaos Jod and the kids left behind when they jump to hyperspace in Skeleton Crew episode 3.
19 Jod's Anti-Droid Attitude Is A Legacy Of The Clone Wars
Mirroring Din Djarin
It's quickly established that Jod Na Nawood has a pretty big distrust of droids in general, not just The Onyx Cinder's first mate, SM-33. This likely stems from the widespread hate many droids faced in the wake of the Clone Wars, not unlike Pedro Pascal's Din Djarin in The Mandalorian.
18 Yet Another B1 Battle Droid
"Did We Win?"
Encountering the remains of a barely functioning B1 battle droid while searching for SM-33, Jod briefly turns on the Separatist droid before it falls apart. Hilariously, the B1 asks if they won, apparently unaware that the Clone Wars ended decades prior.
17 A Familiar Voice From Benjar Pranic
Alfred Molina
While smuggling SM-33 out of Port Borgo, Jod encounters one of his old crew members who should sound familiar. An Ishi Tib named Benjar Pranic, this alien pirate is voiced by actor Alfred Molina. While Molina is likely best known for playing Doctor Octopus in Sony's Spider-Man movies, he's also an accomplished voice actor as well.
16 Faking The Force With Magnets
Like Obi-Wan Kenobi's Haja Estree
Close
When Jod leaves to save SM-33, the kids debate about whether they can trust him. While Wim says he must be a Jedi due to his use of the Force, Fern counters that the Force can be faked using repulsorlifts, tractor beams, magnets, or even really thin string. Interestingly enough, faking the Force with magnets was seen in Obi-Wan Kenobi by Kumail Nanjiani's character Haja Estree, a con man pretending to be a Jedi who helped fugitives evade the Empire.
15 The Hyperspace Tricks Are So Very Familiar
Lightspeed Skipping, Holdo Maneuvers, and More
Despite being caught on a fuel line, The Onyx Cinder jumps to hyperspace all the same which results in mass chaos in their wake at Port Borgo. This is not like other unconventional lightspeed jumps seen in the Star Wars canon such as lightspeed skimming in The Rise of Skywalker or the Holdo maneuver in The Last Jedi.
14 Yes, Star Wars Is Still Telling Us The Odds
Evoking C-3PO and Lobot
When Jod asks a still-awake KB if she trusts him, she responds that she's calculated the low odds of him actually being a Jedi. This evokes C-3PO who often revealed the odds to his fellow Rebels in the original trilogy, as well as Lando Calrissian's right-hand man Lobot, who similarly had cybernetic implants to help him calculate and process data.
13 Skeleton Crew Uses Some Classic Sound Effects
Theremins For A Retro Sci-Fi Sound
Upon their arrival to meet with Jod's old contact Kh'ymm, theremins can be heard in Skeleton Crew's score by composer Mick Giacchino. This provides a very classic and retro sci-fi sound. Theremins were also heavily used in the score for Marvel's Loki series.
12 Skeleton Crew Episode 3 Features A Nod To E.T./Stand By Me
Backlit By A Moon
Close
The crew being backlit by the moon very much resembles the classic shot from 1982's E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial with the bicycle in the sky at night. This makes sense given Skeleton Crew's Amblin inspirations. That said, this could also be a nod to Rob Reiner's Stand By Me and its classic poster.
11 There's A Very Familiar Door Probe
A Gatekeeper Droid
Jod and the kids are initially met by Kh'ymm's gatekeeper droid, just like the one that was first seen outside Jabba's palace in Return of the Jedi and multiple places across the Star Wars galaxy since (including The Mandalorian).
10 Kh'ymm Is Voiced By Alia Shawkat
Best Known For Arrested Development
Jod's contact is revealed to be an owl-like alien named Kh'ymm who lives in a large interstellar observatory. Kh'ymm herself is voiced by Alia Shawkat, who's best known for playing Maeby Funke in Arrested Development.
9 "Lost A Planet, Master Obi-Wan Has"
At Attin Is A Lost Jewel of the Old Republic
Attempting to help the kids find "their lost planet", Star Wars fans will likely recall a similar situation in the prequels. After all, trying to find this "Lost Jewel of the Old Republic" is not unlike when Obi-Wan Kenobi was trying to locate the world of Kamino which had been erased from the Jedi Archives.
8 Translating The Old Republic Scroll's Aurebesh
Revealing New Clues About At Attin
Custom Image by Molly Brizzell
Thanks to ScreenCrush's excellent breakdown of Skeleton Crew episode 3, the aurebesh letters surrounding these Jewels of the Old Republic have been partially translated, revealing more clues about At Attin and its secrets:
"And so the Senate deemed it good and necessary... The Republic and so founded the wither (?) And the families were nourished. And upon them settled various... Republic financial... But as the Jewel... So the Great Work and at Great Work... The Republic with tranquility and kinship... People of many Republic...The Wands other worlds which were open... Republic and the Republic closer and hidden eve... Ninth At-Attin founder and thus it... This day where the Great Work was... Great Worth."
As such, it's going to be fascinating to learn more about "The Great Work" as the show continues.
7 List of Classic Star Wars Planets
Mustafar, Mandalore, Tatooine, And More
Close
Also thanks to ScreenCrush's breakdown, a monitor in Kh'ymm's observatory has been translated, revealing a list of several classic Star Wars planets written in Aurebesh. These planets include Mustafar, Mandalore, Tatooine, Hoth, Kamino, Bespin, Coruscant, and Corellia, all major planets seen throughout the Skywalker saga.
6 Coruscant & Alderaan Are Specifically Name-Dropped
Confirming How Long At Attin Has Been Hidden
As far as other worlds are concerned, Neel confirms that he and his fellow kids from At Attin have only ever learned about core Republic worlds such as Coruscant and Alderaan. That said, they've also never heard of Alderaan's destruction during the Galactic Civil War, further confirming just how long At Attin has been removed from the rest of the galaxy.
5 Wait, What Are Palmarish Numerals & "Proto-Republic" Artifacts?
What Do We Know About Before The Republic?
Aiding in her search for At Attin, Kh'ymm uses an insignia on Fern's pack to refine her data. To that end, she mentions that she's never seen "Palmarish numerals on Proto-Republic artifacts." As such, this is an exciting clue that those living in the New Republic timeline possess some intriguing knowledge about the galaxy before there was even an Old Republic.
4 At Attin's Symbol Seemingly Combines Two Iconic Disneyland Logos
Star Tours and Captain EO
Skeleton Crew already has some great connections to both Star Tours and Captain EO that were seen in the first two episodes, first with an RX-pilot droid and a chime from the classic Star Wars ride, as well as Fuzzball being featured in Port Borgo, the little furry creature that sat on Michael Jackson's shoulder in the 3D short film that once played in Tomorrowland. As such, it does stand to reason that this new At Atiin insignia is indeed inspired by the combined logos from Star Tours and Captain EO. Major credit goes to Reddit user u/emcee_you for catching this awesome Skeleton Crew Easter egg.
3 The X-Wing Sector Patrol Arrive In T-65s
The New Republic's T-70s Are Still To Come
Close
When the New Republic patrol arrives to arrest Jod, it comes in the form of two classic T-65 X-Wings. As such, it looks as though the sequel trilogy's new T-70s are still a ways off, let alone Poe Dameron's signature black and orange T-70.
