During a brief respite from his sentence in the mines, of which only a day has passed, Lukas is summoned by Bernard in "Descent" to try and recover the contents of the pulverized hard drive. Later in the episode, Lukas proves to be successful in at least starting to find what information the device holds. Firstly, the hard drive houses blueprints of Silo 18, with areas that are unknown to both Lukas and, more surprisingly, to Benard. However, there is something even more compelling that Lukas is slowly piecing together.

Bernard openly admits that there are people more qualified than Lukas when it comes to the task at hand, but the mayor has a specific reason for selecting Nash's character. In short, it's because Bernard knows that Lukas' thirst for knowledge will cause him to prioritize the task and work as hard as he can on it. Plus, he is essentially working for his freedom, with the contract only valid while Bernard requires his skills. Of course, the information on the hard drive is also sensitive, so Silo 18's mayor won't want it falling into general circulation.
