DC Reveals First Look at Absolute Flash, And It Features a Pitch-Perfect Easter Egg for Fans

The Flash's highly anticipated redesign for the Absolute Universe has finally been unveiled, and it's unlike anything the Scarlet Speedster has ever worn before. DC's Absolute continuity has already reinvented traditional Justice League heroes in bold ways, and the Flash's new costume is the latest in a long line of exciting changes.

In a Threads post, Jeff Lemire shared his variant cover for the upcoming first issue of Absolute Flash, which he's writing alongside artist Nick Robles. Lemire's cover is a hilarious callback to a cover from the Silver Age, and it also grants fans their first look at the Flash's suit in this revamped continuity.

The Flash's Absolute Universe design has been revealed at long last in Lemire's epic cover artwork. Not only does this art showcase Wally West's new - and, in some ways, improved - costume, but it also serves as a fun Easter Egg for longtime Flash fans.

Jeff Lemire has posted Absolute Flash's full character sheet by artist Nick Robles on Threads as well, giving fans a better look at Wally West's updated design. Right off the bat, what stands out about this new costume is the addition of a sleek red jacket. The Flash's new costume resembles that of a race car driver, complete with goggles to protect his eyes and sneakers to make running easier. The colors, too, are a departure from the Flash's usual red and gold color scheme. Though the jacket and goggles incorporate these colors a bit, the primary color scheme for this Flash is black and white.

The changes to the Flash's costume are a far cry from his usual outfit, but they aren't entirely unprecedented. In fact, the Flash's Absolute redesign is full of clever references to past looks. Most notably, Wally's hair flowing freely with an open-cowl is a callback to his classic Kid Flash design. Furthermore, the black accents resemble the Flash's current costume in the main universe - which is also a major change from the status quo. Of course, as different as his suit may be from what readers are used to, the Absolute Universe's Flash is dressed perfectly for the superhuman speeds he'll be running at.

Wally West is ready to take center stage as the main - and only - Flash of DC's new continuity, forging his own legacy rather than following in the footsteps of speedsters before him. Though Barry Allen doesn't seem to be present in the Absolute Universe, Lemire's callback to him via cover art is a perfect way to recognize his prominent role in Flash lore. He helped make the Flash what he is today and, moreover, is an important figure in Wally's life. Barry may not be around for this redefined Flash, but his impact will undoubtedly be felt through Easter Eggs such as this cover.
