Mighty Morphin Power Rangers’ 2024 Return Is A Reminder Of What Made The 1990s TV Show So Good

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Rita’s Rewind, Power Rangers’ newest game, is a nostalgic reminder of what made the original 1990s show so good. Whether Power Rangers should focus on Mighty Morphin or give other seasons their time in the spotlight is an old debate within the fanbase. On the one hand, standalone seasons have been the foundation of the Power Rangers TV show for decades. On the other hand, no Power Rangers season ever matched Mighty Morphin in terms of popularity.

While MMPR is arguably not the best Power Rangers show, it remains the most iconic and culturally significant over 30 years later. Power Rangers is synonymous with Mighty Morphin for many, which is why the original five teenagers with attitude and their classic villains are always showing up in different projects. This includes Rita’s Rewind, a very fun game that celebrates the original series and offers lots of nostalgia.

Power Rangers: Rita’s Rewind Is A Reminder Of How Fun Mighty Morphin Was

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers’ Nostalgia Remains Strong 30 Years Later

Designed to resemble earlier Power Rangers games, including classics like the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie game for SNES, Rita’s Rewind is a nostalgic return to the world of MMPR. The game looks and feels like something straight from the 1990s, although it does play with a lot of modern concepts from the Power Rangers canon. For example, Robot Rita, who was introduced in 2023’s Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Once & Always, is one of the main villains of the game.

Robot Rita was created in Once & Always after Billy accidentally restored Rita Repulsa's evil essence while trying to resurrect Zordon. Rita's spirit then took over Alpha's body.

Robot Rita’s plan in Rita’s Rewind is similar to what se tried to accomplish in Once & Always – team up with her younger self to change history and defeat the Power Rangers once and for all. Rita’s Rewind’s time travel shenanigans gave the game the perfect excuse to dive deep into nostalgia, which works considering this is a love letter to Mighty Morphin. The game is a reminder that, from the costumes to the Zords, everything about Mighty Morphin Power Rangers still feels exciting and fun 30 years later.

Related After Mighty Morphin’s 30th Anniversary, The Next Power Rangers Reunion Should Be Obvious Power Rangers: Once & Always was the Mighty Morphin reunion 30 years in the making, but another nostalgic season deserves something similar.

Mighty Morphin is arguably a franchise of its own within Power Rangers. While it may be frustrating that other great seasons don’t get as much love in terms of games, comic books, and toys, it makes sense for Power Rangers to focus on its most recognizable property. Power Rangers should not rely on Mighty Morphin only, but Rita’s Rewind proves that there is still room for new stories and adaptations set in that world.
