James Gunn Addresses What To Expect From Clark Kent And Lois Lane's Relationship In Superman: "There's Long Scenes That Are About Their Relationship"
Superman director James Gunn has shared interesting insight on how Clark Kent and Lois Lane's relationship will be handled in the upcoming DC Universe film. The casting process to find the DCU's Lois and Clark was a long one. In the end, Gunn chose to mix and match the finalists to find the perfect pair, and when David Corenswet's Superman came into contact with Rachel Brosnahan's Lois Lane, the director knew he had Superman's lead duo. Gunn has since stated how integral of a role their relationship is to the Superman movie's story, and he has revealed more details.
In June, ScreenRant’s Rob Keyes attended a Superman set visit alongside other outlets in Cleveland, Ohio, where James Gunn commented on how Clark Kent and Lois Lane's relationship would work in Superman. The director said the couple has a complicated relationship, and the upcoming DCU movie will focus on showing how such different characters can work romantically. Gunn mentions how "long scenes" are dedicated to showing how Lois and Clark work as a couple. When asked whether Lois knows that Clark is Superman in the movie, Gunn played coy, saying, "Well, we'll see." Check out the full quote below:
"James Gunn: It's a complicated relationship, and we really get into it and there's long scenes that are about their relationship and the way they relate and what it would be like for a person who's this incredibly intelligent, strong-headed, stubborn, skeptical journalist, to have a relationship with someone who can lift a skyscraper. SR: Does Lois know if Clark is Superman? James Gunn: Well, we'll see. She knows who Superman is..."
DC Comics' Most Iconic Relationship Is Being Handled With Care

James Gunn has talked on multiple occasions about how the DCU's first movie will focus on the Clark Kent and Superman sides of David Corenswet's character equally. It makes sense that there would be so much focus on Lois and Clark's relationship, as it is the core force of many DC Comics stories and one of the most iconic relationships in all of fiction. Based on Gunn's comments, Superman will be showing how Lois' skeptical nature will have to come to terms with a man who has power beyond comprehension, which must be hard for her.
Actor Character David Corenswet Clark Kent/Superman Rachel Brosnahan Lois Lane Nicholas Hoult Lex Luthor Skyler Gisondo Jimmy Olsen Terence Rosemore Otis Sara Sampaio Eve Teschmacher Nathan Fillion Guy Gardner/Green Lantern Edi Gathegi Michael Holt/Mister Terrific Isabela Merced Hawkgirl Anthony Carrigan Rex Mason/Metamorpho Maria Gabríela De Faría Angela Spica/The Engineer Frank Grillo Rick Flag Sr.
Gunn's comments about whether Brosnahan's Lois Lane knows Superman's secret identity are also interesting. The director played coy about the reveal, leaving it for the movie to explain. Gunn did confirm that she knows about Superman when the film starts, which is in line with how the DCU is handling the Man of Steel. Instead of an origin story for the hero, James Gunn's Superman movie catches up with David Corenswet's Superman a few years into his superhero career. As such, Lois must have already covered Superman stories for years, resulting in a unique relationship between the two.
The Duo's Dynamic In The DCU Should Be Interesting

James Gunn's Lois and Clark comments make me more excited about the new Superman movie. Their relationship is the most important in DC Comics, and focusing on how Lois' skeptical nature clashes with Superman, a powerful being no one can control or knows much about, will make for an interesting entry point into their DCU dynamic. Gunn understands the complicated nature of that relationship at first, and taking the time amid the superhero action to have long scenes about Lois and Clark is a fantastic choice, as focusing on the movie's heart is as important as action for Superman.
Superman flies into theaters on July 11, 2025.
