Marvel Rivals Developers Aren't Considering Role Queue At This Point, Even After It Being Highly Requested
The Marvel Rivals developers have shared that they aren't considering adding a role queue to the game right now, instead hoping to see how the game develops with more player freedoms. Unlike more traditional hero-shooters like Overwatch 2, the game allows players to create teams with any number of vanguards (tanks), duelists (DPS), and strategists (supports/healers) or even leave roles completely empty. While this is positive for dynamic gameplay, many players have struggled in out-balanced matches, hoping for a role queue to fix things.
Marvel Rivals creative director Guangyun “Guangguang” Chen has shared that the team is not looking to implement a role queue anytime soon, wishing to encourage players to utilize various team compositions that use the game's unique team-up skills. As they continue to gather positive data within the game's first few weeks, it seems that Marvel Rivals doesn't need the limitations of a role queue right now. Instead, the team will monitor compositions and how they affect the game, potentially looking to balance overpowered selections rather than prevent players from choosing a mix of characters.
Marvel Rivals Devs Aren't Considering Adding Role Queue
NetEase's Priority Is On A Wide Variety Of Playstyles
The NetEase team isn't currently looking to take on fan feedback for the implementation of a role queue into Marvel Rivals, encouraging players to enjoy the creative freedoms that are in play. As they don't view their roles as traditional as other games within the genre, many characters are capable of doing more than their simple tank, damage, or support labels. With that in mind, players are encouraged to explore the potential of character combinations, with things so far being "rational and within expectations" according to the team.

Coming to Reddit to share the news, players have expressed a mix of opinions over this somewhat controversial topic, seemingly tearing the fanbase in two. One player, who goes by General_Narducky on Reddit, shared "This is frustrating to hear. My buddy and I are already getting really frustrated being relegated to tank and support every game if we want to win," acknowledging how this can affect player experience and fun. Another user, GylGylGylGylGylGyl, offers the opposite take though, admitting "The more I play, the more I'm okay with no role queue," enjoying the variety and non-standard teamplay it offers.
Our Take: Giving Players Freedom Is Positive, For Now
Avoiding Role Queue Allows For More Unique Gameplay

While there is some fierce argument both for and against role lock in Marvel Rivals, for now, it seems positive to explore the game's potential without it. If it's ever brought to the game, it'd be hard to take away again, and allowing players the freedom right now to utilize unique compositions is a lot of fun. That's not to say the game is perfect where it stands though, with some players at least hoping for a "minimum 1" or "maximum 4" requirement placed on roles to limit full-stacking to one role.
With the news of its Winter Celebration event, Marvel Rivals feels like it's in a strong position at present, giving players a lot of ways to play and things to enjoy. Despite the news of no role queue coming to the game anytime soon, it's clear that the NetEase team is eagerly paying attention to fans and considering the future of the game with great care. With that in mind, players should be hopeful that Marvel Rivals will continue to deliver fun player experiences, whether that be with or without role lock down the line.
