1 Dead After Speedboat Slams Into Ferry With 56 Passengers Off Mumbai

Several teams are involved in the rescue operation

A boat carrying 56 people capsized near the Gateway of India, killing one. Twenty have been rescued, the authorities said.

The boat had sailed from the Gateway of India to Elephanta Island, off the Mumbai coast. It began to sink when it set out to return to Mumbai.

Visuals show people wearing life jackets being rescued and shifted to another boat, while the vessel began tilting towards the water surface.

The operation to rescue the remaining passengers is going on. Three teams from the Indian Navy, the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA), the Coast Guard, Yellow Gate police station, and fishermen are involved in the rescue.

People use public ferries to sail to the Elephanta Caves, located east of Gateway of India.
