Dexter: Original Sin Premiere Missed An Obvious Callback For Michael C. Hall's Dexter To The 18-Year-Old Pilot Episode
WARNING: SPOILERS ahead for Dexter: Original Sin episode 1.
The Dexter prequel series Dexter: Original Sin missed a prime opportunity to incorporate a signature "Dexterism" in its pilot episode. Developed by New Blood creator Clyde Phillips, the prequel series chronicles a post-college Dexter as he embraces his "dark passenger" through the guidance and teachings of his adopted father, Harry. Dexter implements Harry's code to satisfy his violent urges while making sure never to get caught.
After Michael C. Hall reprised his iconic role as the charismatic vigilante serial killer in 2021's Dexter: New Blood, he returns as Dexter's inner voice and narrator in the prequel series. The series takes place in Miami in 1991 as Dexter begins his career at Miami Metro PD. Dexter: Original Sin will likely cover a few anticipated kills that are already established in Dexter's lore. Another upcoming Dexter series, Dexter: Resurrection, is expected to be released in the summer of 2025 with Hall also slated to return.

Dexter Should Have Walked Into Miami Metro With His Classic Box Of Donuts
Dexter's donuts are a staple of his Miami Metro MO
Dexter Morgan makes his Maimi Metro debut in the Dexter: Original Sin premiere episode – without his signature box of donuts. Since it's his very first introduction to Miami Metro and he's trying to make a good first impression, it seems like a missed opportunity to not have him walk in with his classic assortment of donuts. This small but significant detail was such a key part of his workplace persona at Miami Metro, so its omission from the premiere feels like an obvious oversight.
At the end of the Dexter: Original Sin premiere when Dexter is introduced at Miami Metro, there is one slight nod to the otherwise missing donut detail. Camilla Figg, the records supervisor at Miami Metro PD who was played by Margo Martindale in the original series, welcomes Harry back from his hospital leave with a donut on top of her coffee cup. This suggests that there could be more to the Dexter's donuts origin story in a later Dexter: Original Sin episode.
Dexter: Original Sin Can Still Reveal Where Dexter Originally Got The Idea To Bring Donuts
The series could still introduce a donut origin story
Close
There is still plenty of time for Dexter: Original Sin to come up with an origin story for Dexter's signature donut offerings. While it feels like a missed opportunity to not include that detail in the first episode, the series could be leading up to it, especially considering the notable donut nod from Camilla during her introductory scene. Hopefully, like other aspects of Dexter's younger self, there will be an insightful explanation of why Dexter started bringing in his classic donuts in future episodes of Dexter: Original Sin.
