Thor's Son Finally Earns His Godly Title, And It Has Absolutely Nothing to Do With Thunder

Warning! Spoilers ahead for The Immortal Thor #18!In a twist of fate, the godly superhero Thor's son has been revived in the main Marvel Universe, and shockingly, he has been entrusted to wield Thor’s hammer, Mjölnir, in his new role as the God of Strength. Just as the God of Thunder has been prophesied to die, Magni returns, and it appears his mother, Enchantress, is using her son to make a play at Thor’s power.

The Immortal Thor #18 – written by Al Ewing, with art by Jan Bazaldua – features Enchantress tricking Thor into bringing back Magni, who is Enchantress and Thor’s son from an alternate universe, where Thor was the cruel ruler of Midgard. Enchantress tells Magni Thor is going to die, and that she tricked Thor into bringing him to their dimension so that he could be the heir to Asgard.

Thor’s son has a drastically different history, as he hails from a universe where Thor turns into a tyrant; however, in his timeline, Magni was proven worthy of Mjölnir, making him deserving of Thor’s power and a prime candidate as Thor’s successor. While Magni won’t be the God of Thunder, he is physically stronger than Thor as the God of Strength, and with his father’s hammer, he would also have the powers of Thor, making him an even more powerful king than his father.

Magni’s ascension to the throne calls back to Thor (Vol. 2) #79 by Dan Jurgens and artist Scot Eaton, where Thor tells Magni he’d make the best king for Asgard. In his timeline, Magni is very similar to Thor; he is worthy of Thor’s power and takes a liking to Earth, so it’s within reason that Magni would be a compelling heir, but Enchantress openly notes she wants to use Magni to act as “Mother Queen." It’s unclear what Enchantress' plans are, but she is undoubtedly using Magni to gain influence within Asgard by ensuring her son receives the All-Power.

Magni Is Foreshadowed To Take Up Thor’s Throne Of Asgard As The God of Strength

But His Mother, Enchantress, Complicates Things

Despite Enchantress’ blatant scheme, Thor is willing to give his son Mjölnir, evidently accepting him as his successor and a genuine God of Asgard. Magni's return is intriguing but begs whether his return is truly a good revelation as it plays into what Enchantress wants. Despite his immortality, Thor’s recent brush with death at the hands of B-tier villains has made him eager to pass on the All-Power to a competent heir should he perish and Magni returning into existence fills that role.

Magni’s inclusion is a major shake-up to the status quo of the Asgard pantheon, as he joins Thor’s ranks by dawning the title God of Strength.

As it’s been hinted that Magni will wield Thor’s most symbolic weapon, Thor’s son will become a new staple for the Asgardian Pantheon as the God of Strength, possibly bypassing his father in feats of strength and power. While Thor appears hopeful of Magni’s return, Enchantress’ goals are still for the most part uncertain, so there is bound to be a dark twist to this father-son reunion. Magni’s inclusion is a major shake-up to the status quo of the Asgard pantheon, joining Thor’s ranks, and becoming Thor’s heir within Marvel’s main continuity.

The Immortal Thor #18 will be available on December 18, 2024, from Marvel Comics!
