Carry-On Is Very Close To Just Being A Remake Of Its Director's Thriller With Liam Neeson From 6 Years Ago (& That's Not A Bad Thing)

Carry-On is the newest movie from director Jaume Collet-Serra, and it is very close to just being a remake of Collet-Serra's thriller with Liam Neeson from six years ago. However, this isn't a bad thing. Netflix's Carry-On is the new holiday hit from the streaming service, with the crime thriller starring Taron Egerton and Jason Bateman. Carry-On may feel a bit familiar for longtime fans of Jaume Collet-Serra, as the new Netflix movie is incredibly similar to one of the director's previous hits.

Carry-On follows Taron Egerton's Ethan Kopek, a TSA agent who accidentally gets caught up in a massive criminal conspiracy after Jason Bateman's villainous the Traveler forces him to let a specific bag through security. Ethan then has to figure out how to alert his fellow agents without letting the Traveler and his co-conspirators know, as those involved with Carry-On's big crime have threatened to kill Ethan's wife if he fails. The exciting thriller has been a major hit, and fans of the film may enjoy one of Collet-Serra's other movies.

Although there are some differences, Carry-On is incredibly similar to another Jaume Collet-Serra movie titled The Commuter. 2018's The Commuter stars Liam Neeson as an insurance salesman who, while commuting home on the train, is contacted by a representative of a group of criminals and forced to take part in a major criminal conspiracy. Throughout the film, Liam Neeson's character must uncover the true plans of the criminal and figure out how to stop them before time runs out.

The descriptions of Carry-On and The Commuter make both films sound incredibly similar, and that's because they are. While both films are good, it is impossible not to notice these similarities, such as the criminal organizations, the average Joes with everyday jobs who are forced to participate, and the setting of a travel-related location.

Luckily, Carry-On's similarities to The Commuter aren't a bad thing, as the 2024 film is a return to form for Jaume Collet-Serra. The director has only made two films between The Commuter and Carry-On, with these being Jungle Cruise and Black Adam. The two Dwayne Johnson blockbuster vehicles are incredibly different from the director's other movies, and they just weren't the best use of his talents.

While Carry-On is undoubtedly a smaller movie than Jungle Cruise or Black Adam, the film feels much more like a Jaume Collet-Serra movie than the others. The director works much better with these smaller-scale crime thrillers, and hopefully Carry-On is a sign of more movies like this to come.
