"James Was Very Specific": The DC Universe's First Look At The Justice League And How James Gunn Was Involved Explained By Creature Commandos Showrunner
WARNING: This article includes MAJOR spoilers from Creature Commandos season 1, episode 4.The Creature Commandos showrunner explains what went into the makings of that big Justice League moment in the DC Universe TV show. While a Justice League movie may not be happening in James Gunn's DC Universe anytime soon, that doesn't mean the team isn't getting its moments in the freshly launched franchise. In Creature Commandos episode 4, through Circe's visions to Amanda Waller, the DC Universe audience got to witness what will happen in the future and to the world's heroes if the Wonder Woman foe doesn't succeed with her mission.
During ScreenRant's exclusive interview with Creature Commandos showrunner, Dean Lorey, the executive producer was asked about what the process looked like in showcasing the Justice League and how Gunn was involved with the characters that got featured in the vision. According to Lorey, it was crucial for the plot of Creature Commandos season 1, as he stated the following about how significant this reveal was for the episode:
Dean Lorey: James was very specific about what he wanted in there. But I don't know that it has any meaning outside of the show. I don't know that it's building to anything in the DCU, but it has great meaning inside of this series. So I don't know if that answers the question, but it's, as far as I know, not leading to anything. But James holds his cards pretty close to the vest.
ScreenRant: Was it a big deal for you coming in? Because he created the show, but you're the showrunner, so what was it like when you saw that script, were you like, 'Oh, my God, we're going to show all of this?!' What was your reaction to that?
Dean Lorey: It was such a big moment. It was probably the reaction you had when you saw it. When I read it, I was like, 'Oh, my God, we're doing this? Okay!' But it was exciting to do, and we spent a lot of time on it. It was really trying to land and make it work. There's a lot that happens, story-wise, as a result of that vision. So it was important that we landed it.
When ScreenRant also spoke with Rick Flag Sr. actor Frank Grillo, the DC Universe was also asked what this reveal from Creature Commandos episode 4 will do for the rest of the season. When it comes to how Rick will deal with this revelation as he leads Task Force M, Grillo teased the following:
Frank Grillo: That's a big crossroad, and depending on how/which path you take, it could have incredible results. That's a big turn for how I think and feel and behave for the rest of it. It is the most critical episode.

From Lorey's commentary, it seems that this Justice League vision is more retained to the Creature Commandos story rather than necessarily setting up future projects in Chapter 1: "Gods and Monsters." This is why the Commandos are needed, to make sure that this future doesn't come to fruition, especially as Creature Commandos season 1 heads into its final three episodes. Time will tell if Gunn himself will give his perspective on how he crafted the Justice League cameos for Creature Commandos episode 4.
It's key to remember that, while this is a fascinating insight into the upcoming DC hero roster, the franchise isn't locked in to this future being definite just because this is how Creature Commandos first showed the Justice League in the DC Universe. Circe's vision was to warn Amanda of what she has seen and why she is pursuing Princess Ilana, as the Wonder Woman foe becomes a necessary evil in this scenario. On a positive note, this moment also allows fans to be reminded that there are tons of DC characters coming in Gunn's franchise in the next few years across TV and film.
While Lorey may not have written Creature Commandos episode 4, it's clear that this was as big for him as it is for the DC Universe audience, especially with how many characters were actually shown in Circe's vision. Time will tell if viewers will learn more about the DC Universe's Justice League, as there could be more surprises in store. Hopefully, as Creature Commandos season 1 gets closer to its end, it remains to be seen if Circe's information will be expanded further in the coming episodes.
New episodes of Creature Commandos season 1 are released on Thursday on Max.
