Landman Episode 6 Makes Its Demi Moore Problem Even Worse By Missing The Chance To Fix It

This article contains SPOILERS for Landman episode 6.Landman has had a problem with Demi Moore's character since the beginning, and it's only gotten worse after episode 6 missed a chance to fix it. Along with Billy Bob Thornton and Jon Hamm, Demi Moore is one of the biggest stars in the cast of Landman. Despite her recognizable name and talent as an actor, however, Moore has barely had a role in the show's first six episodes. In fact, Landman is completely wasting both Demi Moore and Jon Hamm, and Moore's character, Cami Miller, has done little more than serve as background dressing for a handful of scenes.

With 60% of Landman season 1 finished, Demi Moore has done almost nothing. Cami has gone swimming a few times, shared a few unimportant conversations with Monty (Jon Hamm), and made a few drinks. Landman has been seemingly content with letting Cami walk around in the background while other more important characters do the actual heavy lifting and get some actual character development. Cami and Landman's misuse of Demi Moore has been a problem all season, but the ending of Landman episode 6 made it even worse by not seizing a chance to fix it.

In Landman episode 6, Demi Moore's Cami and Billy Bob Thornton's Tommy finally met on screen, and there was a golden opportunity for the show to give Moore a substantial scene. Landman looked like it was about to do just that when Cami and Tommy began talking about Angela (Ali Larter) and hinting at their old friendship, but it gave up before giving Moore something to do. Instead of letting Moore have a moment in the spotlight, Landman quickly moved past Cami's conversation with Tommy and had her serve Tommy and Monty drinks before departing for the rest of the episode.

The fact that Landman had such a great opportunity to finally use Demi Moore and passed it by unceremoniously is utterly baffling. Landman episode 6 could have been a chance to show that Cami is much more involved in Monty's business than she originally seemed, or it could have shown that their marriage is much more interesting than it's been depicted as so far, but it didn't. Landman could have done literally anything with Moore's character, yet it decided to continue showing her as an obedient wife, subjugated to the background, that literally anyone could have played.

After six episodes, the fact that Landman hasn't used Cami in any major way is very strange. Demi Moore had a tremendous year even before Landman debuted thanks to her leading role in The Substance, which garnered critical acclaim and huge box office earnings. Even before that, Moore was the star of timeless classics like Ghost and G.I. Jane, and she had more than enough name recognition to justify a large part. If Landman somehow finishes out the final four episodes of season 1 without giving Demi Moore something to do, it will be one of the biggest and most confusing missed opportunities in recent memory.

It's utterly confusing that such an accomplished actor took a role in a major TV show only to be a background character at best. Through the first 60% of Landman, Cami has had a maximum of three or four inconsequential lines per episode. It just doesn't make sense that Landman bothered with casting Demi Moore and paying her a star's salary when her character could have been played by an extra. If the final episodes of Landman season 1 don't quickly rectify how unimportant Cami has been, Moore's role in the show will have been a massive waste.

What Landman Should Do With Demi Moore's Cami

Cami Could Easily Reveal Herself As An Integral Part Of Monty's Story

One of the most baffling parts of Moore's small role in Landman also reveals how the show can better use her: she was created by Taylor Sheridan. Taylor Sheridan's shows are filled with well-written and complex female characters, from Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly) in Yellowstone to Joe (Zoe Saldaña) in Lioness. Both Beth and Joe carved out important positions in worlds dominated by men, and Cami could easily do the same and take a more important role in Monty's oil business. Landman could reveal that she's somewhat of a ringer for MTex, or that she contributes something to the business that Monty isn't capable of, like political connections or networking skills.

Whether that means focusing more on Monty's side of the oil industry or somehow bringing Cami and Angela together, Landman has to dive deeper into Demi Moore's character before it's too late.

There's also nothing inherently wrong with a female character whose main role in a show is to be a wife and mother, and Landman could still give Cami more to do in those roles. Angela is the perfect example: her main character trait is being Tommy's wife and Ainsley's mother, yet Ali Larter has done an impeccable job of giving Angela a deeply emotional and moving core. She's had chances to be strong, funny, caring, tragic, and several other things. Cami could easily follow in Angela's footsteps and find a way to show her own depth and strength opposite Hamm's Monty.

Regardless of what Landman does with Cami, it has to do something. Demi Moore is too big of an actor, and she's been too important to Landman's advertising, for Cami to remain as a background character. It's also not enough to simply give Moore more screen time, she has to have some big impact on the plot of Landman. Whether that means focusing more on Monty's side of the oil industry or somehow bringing Cami and Angela together, Landman has to dive deeper into Demi Moore's character before it's too late.
