The Simpsons Season 36 Quietly Revealed A Tragic Ending To Moe's Story From 3 Years Ago

Warning: This article contains SPOILERS for The Simpsons season 36, episode 9, "Homer and Her Sisters."

Although Moe finally seemed to find happiness a few seasons ago, The Simpsons season 36 proves that viewers should not be anticipating wedding bells quite yet. The Simpsons season 37’s renewal has not yet been announced, but the series isn’t struggling despite its longevity. If anything, The Simpsons seems to be enjoying a critical renaissance as everyone from Vulture to YouTube creator SuperEyepatchWolf declared the long-running show “Good again.” The Simpsons season 36’s willingness to change the show’s format and rewrite its established lore plays a major role in this recent spate of critical acclaim.

Experimental efforts like The Simpsons season 36’s second Treehouse of Horror special or episode 6, “Women in Shorts,” prove that the series isn’t wedded to its usual storytelling style. Sadly, The Simpsons also isn’t all that consistent when it comes to canon and continuity. The Simpsons has long been infamous for rewriting its storylines without warning, resulting in everything from the ages of the show’s main characters to the location of their hometown constantly shifting. The Simpsons never age, but the show’s floating timeline means that marriages, deaths, and even entire characters can be retconned out of existence.

The Simpsons Season 36 Episode 9 Implied Moe’s Engagement Ended

Perhaps the most infamous instance of this was The Simpsons simply forgetting about Apu’s existence after a 2017 documentary, The Problem With Apu, highlighted the character's links to historically problematic depictions of Indian Americans. However, season 36, episode 9, “Homer and Her Sisters,” provides another, subtler example. Moe is seemingly somehow single again in The Simpsons season 36, even though the terminally lonely character finally found happiness back in season 33, episode 4, “The Wayz We Were.” In that episode, Moe reunited with his love interest Maya and proposed to her. The episode ended happily as the pair got engaged.

The show revealed that Moe’s engagement seemingly fell apart off-screen at some point.

As if The Simpsons season 36’s sad revelations about Marge’s family weren’t enough, the long-running series twisted the knife further when the show revealed that Moe’s engagement seemingly fell apart off-screen at some point. When Homer brought Patty and Selma to Moe’s Tavern for the first time, Moe immediately fell in love with the duo and began professing his attraction to them. It is still possible that More might have been talking about how hot he found them despite his engagement, although this is unlikely, considering he proceeded to follow them around with binoculars as the episode continued.

The Simpsons Season 36 Can Still Save Moe’s Sweetest Story

Moe berating Homer for never mentioning Patty and Selma to him before and speaking about them as his dream women seemingly proves that he is single, but it is not too late for season 36 to undo this sad unseen breakup. The Simpsons season 36’s big changes to the show’s status quo mean that Moe could reveal he is still marrying Maya in a future episode and write off his comments on Patty and Selma as nothing more than him expressing his unlikely attraction. The Simpsons should undo this breakup, as it was Moe’s sweetest storyline in some time.

New episodes of The Simpsons air Sundays at 8pm on Fox.
