Evangelion Just Released a New Video For Its McDonald's Collaboration, and It's the Wildest Thing of 2024

Despite officially ending in 2021 with the fourth and final film of the Rebuild of Evangelion series, Hideaki Anno's iconic franchise is still making waves among the passionate anime community. After announcing a wildly unexpected collaboration with McDonald's earlier this month, Evangelion has decided to fully lean into the wackiness of this partnership, releasing a promotional video that will leave fans speechless.

If seeing a "Mac Eva" was on your 2024 bingo list, congratulations, because you just won. Hyping up the upcoming release of three Eva-themed burgers in Japanese McDonald's, this video takes iconic scenes from the original anime and adds a new special flavor to them.

A Wild Promo Video Makes This Unlikely Collaboration Even Wackier

Known for its deep philosophical themes, cryptic references to religion and mysticism, and a thoughtful debate on existentialism and human relationships, Evangelion's least expected pairing was with the biggest fast food chain in the world. Started with special McDonald's toys based on the series mechs, delivered to guests who win a holiday lottery, this collaboration has just stepped up. McDonald's Japan announced three Evangelion-themed burgers that will be released on January 6. The way they chose to promote this, however, will perhaps baffle fans of the series.

In a 30-second video, Shinji, Rei, and Asuka have to fight new enemies who undermine humanity's survival: a "Mac Eva" and, in what's perhaps the wildest anime frame of 2024, a burger-shaped Angel floating in the air. The use of the original anime scenes (heavily edited) and voice actors makes the video even crazier, especially when the tragic Eva pilots are seen smiling while holding McDonald's food, delivered straight to their Entry Plugs. However, anime fans must have learned by now that everything is possible, and this Evangelion-McDonald's collaboration just went above and beyond to prove that.
